Customer Questions & Answers

Need a lvl 24 ft beam

IS 1 3/4" X 12" sold by the foot

It is not clear if the STB 20 has 3 or 4 finished sides.

A previous question asked if the beam could be split lengthwise and the response seemed to indicate that it would result in an L shape. This implies that the beam only comes with 3 finished sides even though the picture appears to show 4 finished sides.
Asked by: Keith
I just received and installed mine. It's open and hallow at the top, but both end caps at either side are finished. About every 3-4 ft. inside the mold looks like it filled the center to create more rigidity in the structure. It definitely holds together well.

Can this beam be split lengthwise into 2 beams that are 4 in x 6 in x 16ft?

I already asked this question but I stated 4' x 6" rather than 4" x 6" x 16'. From your response, I know that they can be cut into 4' beams, BUT can they be cut in half the entire length?
Asked by: Lee1205
It's unclear to me. The picture shows a 4-sided beam, but the video shows 3 sides. The answer from the manufacturer (above) also gives conflicting info; first he says yes, then says it can be split into 2 L-shaped beams. I think the answer is no, it is a U-shaped beam that can't be ripped down the middle to give 2 similar beams.

I know this beam isn't structural, but if used on an exterior application could you mount a sun screen to it? Would it support the weight of a pull down screen if the beam is properly attached to the structure on a covered patio?
Asked by: Outdoor
We would suggest building a small wood skeleton system that would attach to the house. Slip the beam over the skeleton. The skeleton system would be what is actually holding the pull down screen, but the beam would give the appearance it was holding it up. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A real room changer. This product is everything that was claimed in the description. It looks great up and totally changes the look of the room which is what we wanted.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value, treat it nicely! Got it installed, and it looks great! My cautions are only that the stain is a little darker than in the item's picture, and it is very easy to rub the stain off. Just resting it on the couch and pulling it slightly seemed to rub off the stain to expose the poly-styrofoam-like material underneath. Overall though, it's really light, easy to cut, fairly easy to install with 2 people (would have been super nice to include mounting blocks) and I'm very happy with the end result. Google "how to install a faux wood beam" before installing if you haven't done this before. It's do-able for a first-timer, but just no there are no instructions that come with this item. They expect you know what you're doing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks like the real thing. .I love the beam. It was cut into 4 equal sections of 4 feet each and spaced equally across my vaulted living room ceiling. Not too much wood, just the right look. It did have to be cut by hand rather than by using a miter box/saw as my ceiling pitch was greater than a 45 degree angle. I think it's a little pricey since it's not really wood, but it's much easier to install. Glue and a few finishing nails did the job. No need to tie into the ceiling joices. It's a nice finishing touch to an otherwise plain white vaulted ceiling.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value Took out a wall between the kitchen and dining room. Used the beam to hide gap in the ceiling, it covered the space well and looks very realistic. It is also strong and does not break easily, however it can be broken. used a jig saw with a fine blade to cut it and file for minor adjustments. I did have some of the color of the beam rub off-doesn't go very deep in the foam. Still a good product and would recommend it.
