Questions & Answers

Would this work on a roof, patching large bubbled area of old asphalt roof coating

Is this fiberglass? I have a mobile home with black asphalt coating that has bubbled. (2-6" bubbles, not leaking yet) I want to cut the bubbles and patch it and then recoat the roof with a white coating to keep it cooler. I think Sta-kool 770 or 780 is compatible with my old coating. I don't have to do the whole roof, just over one room. Do you think I should use this mesh under the new coating? Or do you know where I can get fiberglass patching fabric wider than 6"?
Asked by: DIYGrandma
This stuff might or might not work for a roof repair like you are describing. However, I've found that places that specialize in RV and mobile home repairs can and WILL give you an answer. Call or go visit one of these guys. They aren't busy playing CYA. I would wait for a spell of dry weather before opening the darned thing up. You've got to dry the water vapor out of the insulation below.

Is the Stickey Mesh Heavy Duty ?

Is the Sticky Mesh Heavy Duty 19 in. X 150Ft, the product that the builder would put on the outside of my home before they place the (stucco cement) like substance on top...To complete the (stucco process) on my home. Is this the type of insulation that I need to purchase to have my home stucco on the outside?
Asked by: DonnaCarter
Yes, but remember if applying over foam it needs to be brushed and lightly abraided before application.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good tough mesh. Sticks good to rigid foam. not so well to any previous cement like coating, but it still sticks ok. This is a very good alternative to metal mesh.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stuff is sticky, holds the Tuff II coating well, and has good coverage This stuff is sticky. IMHO you need a friend when unrolling and applying. It comes off the roll hard because it's so sticky (one reason you need a friend to help) and sticks to the wall well. To get all the "bubbles" or folds out, touch it to the wall in a couple of places, then using a wide PLASTIC putty knife start in the center of your strip and smooth it out to one side, and then go back to the center and work to the other side. A friend comes in handy here as well so they can keep the loose end of the mesh from hitting the floor (dirt) as you work the other side. The key to having this stuff stick to the foam insulation panels is a CLEAN insulation panel. The hardest part of the whole process for my purpose - covering the exposed foundation insulation panels - was the surface prep. Because the panels had been exposed to the elements, especially direct sunlight, for 3 years the oxidation was "considerable". A semi-stiff plastic "dustpan" brush, blow-off with an airgun, another go over with the plastic brush, followed by a good vacuuming with the shop vac was necessary to get all the oxidation and dust off. I then filled voids and divots with a dense expanding foam and used a fine hacksaw blade (bare) to cut that the cured foam flush with the panel. Finally, with firm and clean panel showing everywhere a light scratching with a wire brush per the manufacturer's recommendations was done and the sticky mesh applied. It stuck very well and provided the perfect base for the Tuff II coating (reviewed separately). The mesh is available in 9 1/2, 19 and 38 inch wide rolls. The 38 inch roll was just too wieldy so I switched to using the 19 inch and overlapping on wide areas. No need to buy the 9 1/2 since it's easy enough to cut the 19 inch one down the center for 9 1/2 if needed for narrow areas. So far, very please with the Styro products. Thanks Home Depot for being a dealer for them and getting the product to me in reasonable time with no issues.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from INTERIOR ROOMS, ALSO Due to heaving flooding, we used this on the interior side of an ICF wall which has an egress window. The mold and redrywalling these past few years has been a problem, to say the least... Works great. I didn't want a heavy or chunky texture so we simply rolled the coating over the mesh and lightly dabbed extra for texture. It looks similar to an eggshell texture. It was time-consuming, but now when the drain backs up too much I'm not afraid to look at the damage.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from MAKES YOU WISH YOU HAD NEVER HEARD OF ICF Expensive. Hard to use. Yet another reason to forget using ICF. Very hard to get off the roll. Like any adhesive backed sheet, has to be installed carefully if it is not going to have bubbles or bulges in it, which will show in the finished coating.
