Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be used as an underlayment for VINYL TILES? Does HD sell 8x4 sheets?

My bathroom has vinyl sheet flooring (that contains asbestos). Can this plywood be installed on top of the vinyl flooring as an underlayment so that VINYL TILES can be installed? Can the vinyl tiles be applied directly to the plywood without any primer, etc.? Is this rated as exterior use plywood? Does Home Depot sell 8x4 sheets, approx. 1/2" thick, with one side sanded and can be used on exterior?
Asked by: MorningGlory123

Is this an appropriate underlayment for ceramic tile in a bathroom? If not, what is?

Asked by: Kay
No. No matter how firm the subfloor; the plywood will expand and contract at a different rate as the tile, causing cracks to develop in the grout lines or tiles over time. On a plywood subfloor, you need either a layer of cement backer board or an underlayment membrane, between the subfloor and tile for the thin-set adhesive to achieve a good bond. Please contact your local store for more information and direction.

Customer Reviews

Sanded Pine Plywood (Common: 15/32 in. x 48 in. x 48 in.; Actual: 0.468 in. x 47.75 in. x 47.75 in.) is rated 1.5 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not worth the price Most of the available pieces of plywood in this length were warped. Also I found the price to be very expensive for a 4X4 piece of plywood. A 4X8 is only a couple dollars more.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bartag on finished surface The barcode tag was placed on the sanded side of the panels. I scraped and sanded but still the left over glue left a blotch where it affected the stain. They should put the barcode on the unsanded side. Product should be described as 'sanded and dinged one side'.
