I'd say if your pretty mechanically inclined ( it doesn't take much ) all the product is .. are tubular steel with indented rings around each pole probably every inch along the poles ... each pole screws together hand tight to make the total length ( nice ) anyway there are two piece plastics that wrap around these tubes fitting into the indentations ( they are tapered ) The shelves have tapered fittings on them that when fitted over the plastics it becomes a very nice fit ... probably one thing I'd have problems with was making sure they were all at the same highth when placing the plastics on the tubes ... you want for this job a tape measure and a rubber mallet to tab you shelves into the plastics and or if you decide to change the height of any shelf to tap it back out ... lol ... but I'd say it took me 45mins to an hour each unit ... I set up 6 ! Read Less

Answer:
Thank you for your question. This should take a novice approximately 30 minutes to assemble. The hardest part is making sure the shelves are level.
I hope this helps you with your project.

My space has a max height of 71". That said, can I leave the wheels off to make it shorter? Or do the have to be assembled as part of the piece?

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sturdy Garment Rack We purchased this product as a temporary fix for a wire rack system that keeps becoming detached from the wall in the master closet of the house we're renting. The product was easy to assemble and fits nicely in the space. It is sturdy enough to hold my husband's heavy suits and sweaters. Later, it will be very useful in the laundry room of the house we plan to purchase. March 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sandusky equals quality! I have needed a garmet rack for years for extra drying space in my laundry room. Most of the hanging racks I had seen till this one were well just down right flimsy. I search the Home Depot site and found this one and thought even thought it was more expensive then I wanted to pay I hoped that quality came with the larger price tag of this rolling garment rack! I am glad I took the chance!! This rack is very heavy duty and sturdy!! Well worth the price!! I plan to purchase similar ones that are sellers only from Sandusky to use in my garage. Great product from Sandusky! Thanks HOme Depot for selling this great product!!! May 22, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not as stable as I expected. My problem with this review is that prior to buying these racks I had purchased the heavier 6 shelf racks that could hold 600lbs so when I bought these thinking they'd be just the same ... was pretty shocked to see a flimsy somewhat unstable (in my opinion) clothes rack compared to what the other shelving was ... I returned 3 of the 4 I had bought. Also I'd like to have had more smaller racks on the one I did keep so that's why I gave it an average ratting ... if you were like me and bought both you definitely would know what I'm trying to say here ... lol ! Either way I love my Home Depot and all the people there are really nice ... thanks Home Depot ! May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product This garment rack (bought 2) is the answer to too many clothes and closets too small. I love them. I took a bedroom and divided it into half and formed a walk in closet with two other wire shelving units purchased from Home Depot. These racks hold a lot of clothes and are very sturdy. The wheels lock in place until moving them is required-----very easy to move. Only one problem, the racks were hard to put together for me so I had to hire someone to put them together. Instructions could have been made more clear. Even with that cost, I think they are a great value. So happy I made the decision to purchase these racks. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect for me This clothes rack fit my needs perfectly. I live with my son and his wife and I have a part of a room for my bed and this clothes rack. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product Bought this for my room due to no closet..I've bought a couple of similar products but they always tilt or break , so I decided to try this even tho it was higher than I'd usually want to pay. It came very quickly, also very heavy. It took 2 to put together, but I guess one person could try to do it alone. It took about 30 minutes to put together, I'd suggest putting it together in the area you plan on putting it. Make sure you follow the directions exactly, so far it has held up very nicely. I don't use the second rod because the clothes drag the bottom shelf and really needed the shelf space over anything. You could adjust this if necessary, I didn't feel like doing it, but it's a very nice size and holds a lot of stuff.hope this helps anyone who's on the fence about purchasing this item April 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by sturdy and groovy Looks great in an urban style decor. Not too difficult to assemble, though I was never able to fully cover the black plastic stoppers with the shelves' chrome sleeves, despite much pounding with the rubber mallet. Does not bother though. Very solid. Very good price for the quality. March 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wheeled garment rack Assembly was straightforward and not complicated despite a great number of pieces. Nothing was missing and all the parts were easy to identify on the instruction sheet. I am 88 years old and cannot reach over my head so final assembly was accomplished with the rack lying on the floor. A rubber mallet fascilitated final "seating" of some joints. The capacity exceeded my needs so I removed the top half very simply and created a perfect personal unit. I believe the whole thing will be extremely easy to resell when I am thru with it. It is very sturdy and rolls easily since all wheels swivel. December 22, 2015
