I can't imagine the force it would take to attempt to bend this straight edge. It is very heavy duty and reinforced at the point of changing angle. It has a very comfortable hand grip throughout, and on some surfaces it will stay in place by itself while drawing a line. If you simply have it laying on a smooth surface and bump it, the straight edge may very well stay in place. You'd probably never use a flat conventional straight edge again after trying this.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by WarrenJim Nice companion to a 48 in. level!!!
This review is for the Savage Model # SVE480 4 Ft Aluminum Straight Edge
I was granted the opportunity to try this tool, and I've been very pleased. I wasn't at all certain I would find such a device helpful, but that just goes to show that I'm a long way from knowing all about tools.
The straight edge comes with a "no mar" surface on the under side of the tool (see photo). This protects the surface you're working on from scratches as you move the tool into place, and also helps the tool from slipping once in place.
There is a "thumb protector" edge that keeps your hand away from the edge of the work as you run a knife across the surface of the material being cut. This is a very nice feature - 'way beyond what a simple 'yard stick' offers when used as a cutting guide. (It's also nice when running a permanent marker down the edge - the marker can't slip and put ink all over your hand, which I tend to do sometimes).
The scale of the straight edge is laser-etched and looks like it would last for a long time before starting to fade or discolor (see photo).
The tool comes with a "Limited Lifetime" guarantee.
I recently aquired a 4 foot level and was planning on adding a 'stick on' ruler strip to use for measuring and cutting, but this Savage straight edge pretty much makes that idea obsolete. For trimming floor material, cutting wall paper, etc., this gadget is a much better option.
A welcome addition to my tool collection; not one that will get frequent use but I'm glad it's available.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Keith Love this tool
This 48 in. Aluminum Non-Marring Straight Edge Anodized Laser-Etched Scale by Savage is a must have if you are in need or currently use a 48" straight edge. The design of the tool allows you to firmly grip it while measuring and marking. Perfect for corners, ceiling work and so on. The rubber non skid pad on the back is the length and width of the tool actually has stayed on and any saw dust sticking to to can be wiped off. But the key to this tool the the angled part that allows for great hand grip. I love it. The price is right for this high quality tool.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by SteveVA Very handy tool, must have for carpenters or drywall installers
The uses for this tool are many. I have used it for rip-cutting wood, scoring drywall and even bending chicken wire fencing. Before I used a piece of 'straight' wood or a level. This tool is a major improvement and has helped me a lot. It is the perfect length to cut a drywall sheet in half or so and can span plywood sheets. For the wire fencing, I used it as a press to make a straight bend. My end product was a cage.
Three features of the product is the non-slip grip which is useful when you are pressing it on what you would like to cut, it doesn't slide around. The thumb lip on it also helps for positioning. The ability to measure with it is also a plus as well. I can use it as a ruler.
I have owned this for a month and have already made plenty use of it.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by theo98 Quick & Easy Measurements \ Cuts
This 48" Savage Anodized Aluminum straight edge laser-etched scale will get much use in my shop. It is very lightweight and mobile and has excellent measurement markings that are clear and accurate. The design has a curled side that allows for easy handling and protection from sharp marking\cutting tools. The anodized finish is very smooth and will keep the finish perfect for a very long time.
Using a 24" and a 36" .0001 "high dollar straight edges" for checking flatness, the regular flat edge ruler was perfectly square with no out-of-tolerance bowing over the entire 48" length. However, the opposite curled measurement had a .003" dip toward the last 3" and the other side had a .005" dip over it's last 6". If you need Extreme accuracy (like checking machined surfaces), you may want to use high quality precision straight edges. Otherwise, for the $18 purchase and quick edge guide markings, the overall utility use with this tool is extremely high!
