after leaving, how do you lock the door?

I want to put this lock on a gated area at the rear of our building. after people leave this gated area, will the gate lock behind them? or is some action needed to lock the gate? It seemed that other said you have to manually lock. I am afraid that the residents may not bother to do this, which will defeat the purpose of having a gated area. Is there a model that just locks behind you? We have one on our front gate, but I don't want a handle or knob, since the rear area is off an alley, and we have had some trouble with vandals applying downward pressure on knobs to break and gain access.

Answer:
This model is only a deadbolt not a latch on close so it wont help if users don't bother locking it. The actual mechanism is to press the top button 'Schlage' and then turn the outside knob. Pressing this button only lets the knob be turned to locked if it was unlocked. To unlock again a user would have to put in the 4 digit code.

if they press the top button it will allow them to lock the door without the code. They will need a code however to reopen the door.

Answer:
this lock is not recommended for gate use due to being exposed to weather. Additionally, this option does not auto lock and does require steps to lock the deadbolt after the door is closed.

Yes to both questions. Home Depot keyed 4 units, two purchased at the same time, two purchased at a later date. I change key codes often for new cleaning services.

They come with a pre-programmed unique code but you can change that to whatever you want. Or even multiple different new codes. The key lock portion appears to be a typical lock so I would expect that a locksmith could rekey it. I'd call the manufacturer to be sure.

Numbers on key pad do not light up; it is difficult to enter the code numbers in the dark since the numbers don't light up. I am not certain if the key pad is supposed to light up when the code numbers are pressed.

Numbers on the key pad do indeed light up - always easy to see the numbers. If they are not lit up you may need to change the battery or you have a defective unit.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent electronic door lock! We have one of these on our front door and it has been such a great lock! The best thing is they are so easy to program I can put a code in it in less than 1 minute easily, I have our front door master code memorized so I can put a code in it in less than 30 seconds! We got this second one because we rent a room in our basement and we have a separate entrance to the basement and we put this lock on that door, it gives you peace of mind knowing your not giving out keys and have to change locks instead you can erase and program new codes in a couple of minutes! It is also easy to install, it installs just like a regular lock the only extra thing is plugging a wire harness together and putting in a battery, which will last for years by the way and the light up blue keypad is great when it's dark plus it has 10 buttons which is great I know some locks combined numbers so they only have 5 buttons. Well we couldn't be happier with these locks and we are starting to change our rental units to these locks as well! August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Can't beat the convenience Have had 3 of these locks for over a month now with lots of frequent comings and goings and I just LOVE the convenience factor. I have different codes for different people, and it's SO nice not having to worry about where I last put down my keys! I get that they are not fool-proof; heck, what is? But, given that I have an internal alarm system that operates off of a DIFFERENT code than any of the door locks, I feel pretty secure. They also look great (I have the nickel ones that match my current hardware). Would definitely recommend, especially to my friends who are constantly losing their keys. Lol... September 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very good but consider a few things before buying Easy to install, but didn't realize until midway into the project that the molding around the windows interfered with the installation. Didn't even think about this before getting started so a word of caution. Had to cut into the molding a bit to get the lock to fit. Once it was installed, found that the outside knob to lock the deadbolt interfered with the existing screen-door handle. We have to keep the outside knob in a certain position to allow the screen-door to close. We also have to remember to turn the screen-door handle in a certain way now. Minor issues and not a problem with the lock itself, but just things to consider before installing. Some folks might not be willing to put up with these things. Love being able to leave without a key and the key pad lights up nicely at night. September 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best product ever - no more keys I have replaced all keyed locks on my house and rentals with this electronic deadbolt - got rid of all keys - and since I rent to college students/young adults no longer have issues with 'lost keys' . Everyone gets their own code ( think it can hold 19), plus I program a maintenance code for maintenance people that gets changed regularly - easily changeable when people move in and out - I change the battery once a year. Family members have also replaced locks on their houses with the Schlage electronic deadbolt. My college age son installed the Schlage lock with the lever on his bedroom door where he had 10 roommates in the house - he changes the code regularly and can set it to automatically lock or not. Best Electronic Deadbolt out there. I have used this product on my houses for over 5 years. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Keyless Very nice and easy installation abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz August 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Deadbolt ever purchased! This Deadbolt fit great into the existing hole and was easy to install! The Keypad was very easy to use and programing of codes was also easy to figure out that I had my eleven year old set it up. And the lights are bright enough that you are able to see at night September 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Does not matter if I forget my keys. Had one of these installed in my old house for years, so installing in the new house was a no brainer. I have a bad habit of forgetting my keys and can get back in without them. Also great for putting in temp codes for guests. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Installed easily and works well as indicated in the product description The big difference from many keyless door locks is that you have to turn the knob after you have entered the combination. That's no big inconvenience but visitors might not be used to that. I figured it would probably help the battery to last longer. I liked that it does come with an emergency key to get in if the battery or electronics ever fail. You can lock and unlock it from the inside mechanically even if the battery has died.
