When choosing a door handleset, why is the right or left handling opposite?

When I choose "left handling" the lever looks like its for the right handed person. Is it opposite?

Answer: 
handing is determined by what side of the door hinges are on. When facing the front of the door, if hinges are on the left, a left handed lever is needed, when facing the door if the hinges are on the right, a right handed lever is needed.
