I cut some St. Augustine grass that was about 5" in spots and the mower was set at 3". It cut it very well. I assume it would cut yours too.

No, this mower will not do a satisfactory job cutting that much grass at one pass. As I have said in my other replies this is an excellent mower for it's intended purpose. This mower requires that you mow your lawn at least 2 times per week during the fast growing season. It is made for well manicured lawns with a good quality stand of grass, that contains very few weeds. Trying to cut that much grass at one time will require a great deal of effort and the result will not be satisfactory. To get your grass that low will require at least 2 passes, one at the highest setting ( which by the way will promote the most healthy stand of grass), then one at the lower setting. This is NOT a fault of the mower, it is just the way the mower is intended to be used.
If you want to cut the grass less often, a electric or gas powered mower will give much better results and with considerably less effort.

Answer:
My experience is this mower doesn't do well with differences in height more than 2". You most likely will have to make two passes to get the grass down from 4" to the lowest cut height. Also, some species of grasses are easier to cut than others so your results may vary.

No. The mower only works well when the grass is not long. I have to cut my lawn every 3-4 days, otherwise it is too long and VERY difficult to push mower and I must empty catch bag every 10ft.

It's recommended to cut no more then 1/3 of the grass blade at a time when mowing. In your situation we recommend using the highest setting.

It doesn't matter if the grass is tall or short or if the setting is high or low. The mower jams with grass very easily.

Turn the mower over and see what is sticking between the blades. Mulch pieces or sticks will stop the blades from turning.

This type of mower is designed to cut only grass, and not tall spindly weeds either or sticks pieces of wire ect, and such. Also with this type of mower you cant let the grass get over 5 inches tall or it will push over part of the grass and not cut it.
For it's intended purpose though, it will do an excellent job.

There are too many reasons why it could be jamming for me to cover all of them here, but I will touch on the ones I've experienced. This mower is sensitive to how firmly the blades rub against the bottom bar, so you could decrease the tension on the bottom bar and see if that reduces the jamming.
Also, if you have super thick grass you will not be able to go out and cut at whatever height you please. Read More

Also, if you have super thick grass you will not be able to go out and cut at whatever height you please. This mower excels at getting the grass all to the same height, but you can't go out into a healthy thick lawn and take two inches off the top with brute force like you can with a 5hp gas mower. Simply, if you want to take more than an inch or two off every time you cut, you simply will need a different mower. Read Less

my neighbor corrected the problem. Since it was jamming on the left side he made an adjustment to the right side by turning one of the screws to the right of the reel slightly . The reel is now even and the mower is working nicely. Thanks.

Good over weeds?

I have a section of lawn I am no longer watering, so there are patches of dirt and weeds. The weeds are not very high. The dirt is killing my gas mower, and I don't want to go to a weed whacker, as the area is too far from the house for an electric one and gas weed whackers are difficult to keep running. So, would this mower handle such an area - sparse, low weeds - without a lot of back and forth effort?

If weeds or grass for that matter is allowed to get above 4 inches max., this type of mower will not do a satisfactory job.
My suggestion would be to use your gas mower just one more time to get the weeds down low, then follow up
with the Classic Reel Mower from then on and you should have good results. Just don't let the weeds get any higher than about 3-4 inches from then on.

The Classic Reel Mower can be lowered to a 1 inch cutting height with a quick snap adjustment. It would be capable of mowing weeds at that height but not below.

The mower is great for thicker blades of grass and weeds. There are a few weeds that have thin shoots like a swizzle stick and thinner that the mower won't cut. It seems to bend them over with the 5 rotating mower blades rather than cut through.

Yes. That's chiefly what I used it for. Keep in mind that you can't just power through the grass at just any height. This thing makes the tips of the grass uniform, but you can't cut two inches off the top without a lot of frustration. This is not a mower for once-every-two-weeks mows.

For well kept lawn with a stand of good quality grass it will do a fine job. Also you should keep the blades very sharp. You can get a sharpener from Amazon.com made especially for this mower. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ready to go out of the box. Super sharp blades. This is the second Scotts reel mower I own. I put my older one for use at a rental house, and got another for my place. Ready to go out of the box. Super sharp blades. If you have a small area of lawn, this works great and you won't disturb the neighbors early Sunday morning with engine noise. The handle is a bit light weight, but that helps keeps the weight down. The current model has a re-designed handle and it is much better with a padded push bar. Just don't man handle it and it will hold up. The grass catcher is worthless. I always let the clippings go back on the lawn, they mulch in and the lawn just gets better. July 23, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Much easier to use and more durable than I thought I'm a 5'0 women and after my gas powered mower gave out, I was looking for a more environmentally friendly mower. Although I was aiming to get a Fiskar's, budget didn't allow for it. I got this Scotts 20in reel mower and am impressed with how easy it was to use. Now my grass was at least 5-6 inches tall in some places. The reel mower went through with some effort, but not as much as I thought. I didn't have to huff and puff. It does require at least two passes to make sure all the grass is cut down. It DOES NOT cut down weeds. Those I had to pull on my own. At least the taller varieties. I think it worked well for my grass even though I have uneven terrain. I thoroughly enjoyed the use of it and while it took me about an hour to cut down my 1/4 acre, the workout I got from it was very beneficial. I do not mess the smell of gas/exhaust or the bone-rattling noise of my gas mower. June 15, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Handy for small yards The mower cuts grass very good if it's only a few inches tall. Anything higher than that you would have to weed eat it first and then mow. It has a little noise to it as you're mowing but that's normal. September 15, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 70's Tree Hugger's Dream Instead of buying a gym membership I decided to help Mother Nature and myself by purchasing a reel mower. I am very pleased with this mower and would recommend it to anyone who wants to get in shape and be kind to Mother Nature in the process. May 12, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by cuts grass only I bought this mower because I didnt want the hassle of trying to fix my power mower. I used it 3 times and my lawn looked like a jungle. It cuts grass nicely but only grass. My lawn has many dandelions and some of the higher wild grass but it only pushes those over instead of cutting them. After using it three times there were so many dandelions that it didnt look like the yard had been mowed at all. Also the handle isnt as strong as it should be as when I went over any uneven areas I could feel it bending. This mower would only be effective on a flat yard that has no weeds . For me it was a waste of money as now I can't use it and I am out 140. dollars. May 28, 2009
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by You Better have a lot of patients!! I guess this would be a good mower IF: your lawn is perfectly level, you never let your grass get even the least bit high, you are strong as a plow mule, and your yard is COMPLETELY free of any type of twigs. You better have the patients of Job to use this mower. If the blades are adjusted per the instructions, it is extreamly difficult to push, sometimes the wheel will not turn at all if it is in slightly high grass. Something as small as a match or toothpick will jam the blades. I'm sure this mower has a purpose. Beginning to think my yard is not that purpose!! Be prepared to mow your lawn at least twice a week for this mower to function properly at best. June 25, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by reel mower is awesome This reel mower is great the only problem is when you cut tall grass not to ceep it on the the setting on the wheels. We losend a bolt on the blade a little bit to make it easyer to push now it works great! No problems cuts grass stright and looks better than with gass powerd lawn mowers. No geting dirt in your eyes or gas fumes and best is no burnt lawn. Depending on how tall your lawn is will decide if you realy need a grass catcher (Are lawn don't need it we don't let it get that tall) I would only get a grass catcher for tall lawn or if you have a lawn mowing buissness. Over all this better than any lawn mower!!! :) April 16, 2009
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good Mower, Great Customer Service from Company If you have a smaller yard and will mow once a week or so, this is the mower for you. Especially if you like a clean cut and want to go green. Reel mowers are not for you if you let your lawn get really long or there are tall weeds in your yard. I have owned this mower for about a year or so and had no issues until a couple weeks ago when the handle broke. I called the 1-800 number on the manual and they are shipping me a new one free. I would definitely recommend this mower if you want an environmentally friendly, relatively cheap way to mow your lawn that I personally think makes it look better than a gas mower...
