Customer Questions & Answers

Does this inhibit newly applied grass seed from germinating??

My husband was sent to pick up some Scott's Starter Fertilizer for a newly planted section of our yard; he ended up buying the kind with weed preventer. He had it completely spread before I noticed the "plus weed preventer" on the bag. If this prevents crabgrass and dandelions won't it also stop our grass seed from sprouting? The overview of the product seems to indicate you could apply it when seeding but I find it hard to believe it wouldn't inhibit the desired grass seed from sprouting. Can you verify?
Asked by: nlink
In spots where I ran out of this fertilizer the new grass did come in thicker and greener. The new grass in areas treated with this fertilizer did eventually come up but it was light pink in color.

How long after application before dogs can use the area? I know it's better to keep the dogs off new grass but...

I'd rather ask to certain
Asked by: TBinWI
After the application, water the lawn and allow it to dry. Once dry, your pets can reenter the area. Try to minimize traffic on a newly seeded area, though, until the new grass has become established.

Do I apply this product at the same time I lay new grass seed or should I wait and apply?

Asked by: Justin
You can throw this down with seeds, or wait like a week and then apply the fertilizer. It's mostly fast acting nitrogen, some of which may be wasted if you use it at the same time as seeding, because nothing has grown to take advantage of the fertilizer. At the same time, you might want to apply it with seeds to stop weeds. It's up to you.

21.5 lb. 5,000 sq. ft. Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass Plus Weed Preventer is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 165.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Peace of Mind I applied Scott's Turf Builder Starter Food For New Grass Plus Weed Preventer as well as Scott's Contractor Grade Grass Seed Easter Weekend. Using Scott's Wizz it was quick and east to apply both products. With the gentle rain that we had the past few days I am already seeing my yard green up and I know that soon I will see healthy shoots of new grass emerging. I feel confident that my lawn will be weed free as well. Using Scott products regularly helps get and keep my yard picture perfect. With the help of Scott products my yard has gone from looking sad to becoming the one everyone walks by and admires. Considering that I knew nothing about taking care of a yard, since using Scott products and following their suggestions I am feeling more and more confident each year. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally! It is super that Scotts has combined starter fertilizer with weed preventer. The toughest part of growing grass from seed is keeping the weeds out. Same as starting a garden. No longer! This stuff works. My grass started quick and no weeds! About time someone was able to get something gentle enough to work with seedlings, and strong enough to prevent weeds. This is a total win. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New Grass Fertilizer I have been using Scott's fertilizer for years. When I had to plant new seed in a large area in my backyard, I saw this product and decided to give it a try. If you ever planted new seed, it comes in very fine and fragile, this Starter Fertilizer really enhanced the growth of the new seed, creating a thick, lush new lawn. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Pleased With Results Used Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food and Weed Preventer for the first time this spring on my annual trouble area along the two sides of my front driveway. This area is approximately 3 feet by 15 feet in length on each driveway side. For some reason this area has always had poor grass development and requires yearly reseeding. Seeded this area again last fall and applied Scotts food last month. To date the results are very encouraging. The grass seems to be growing well, no signs of any weeds, and results are positive. Applied Scotts by hand and watered. Very simple and easy process to do. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
