Answer:
Depends what type of grass you have. Summergaurd is great on St. Augustine. Really greens it up and no cinch worms. St. Augustine is a broad leaf grass. So be careful what you use. Read the label on Scotts fertilizer. Use one that says good for as all grass.

Answer:
Summerguard really only helps by building turf to overshadow the weeds and kills bugs. This fall and winter try WinterGuard with Weed Control Fertilizer. Then in spring switch to Scotts Turf Builder Fertilizer with Plus 2 Weed Control, then go back to summerguard for summer. They say dandelions aren't actually weeds and that they produce nitrogen that feeds lawns, but I like the just grass look.

Answer:
SummerGuard helps grass to be thick and lush, which does help prevent new weeds from getting started. However, it does not have anything in it to kill weeds that are already there. If you want to use a weed killer this time of year, make sure you are expecting temperatures under 85 degrees.

Hi Dandalion Queen,
Love your screen name.
TurfBuilder SummerGuard is fertilizer with insecticide added to it. There is no herbicide, or weed killer in SummerGuard.
Apply Scott's Weed-B-Gon to the dandelions to kill them. The liquid will enter the weeds through their leaves to kill them, roots and all. It takes a few weeks to see results, but it works, guaranteed.

Answer:
You can but it is not a good idea. You will get it on your shoes and track it around. Best to do it on dry grass. And then you can water it. Always read your labels 0n Scotts fertilizers before you buy. Summergaurd is great on St. Augustine. I have been using it for years. St. Augustine should be mowed close or it will mat up in a few years and then it will have to be thatched.

Hi HEdward, you're right. The lawn should be dry. Then you water thoroughly to activate the product, according to Scotts web page.
http://www.scotts.com/smg/goprod/turf-builder-with-summerguard/prod100066
You will want to apply product using a spreader. This way distribution will be even. Apply June-August.

Is this good on St. Augustine grass. I think this is what I have been using for so many years. I get it at Home Depoe. It looks like the same bag. I just want to make sure it does not kill St. Augustine as it is a broad leaf grass. The Scotts that I have been using gave me great results. Kills all the cinch worms. No more dead spots.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 99 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works like a magic!! I've used Scotts product 2 yrs ago. The Yellow bag Turf builder Weed and Feed burned my lawn and never used it again. But then this year i decided to give it another try with more reading of the instructions and I think that was the reason why it didn't work. It's all in the timing and the right stuff for the lawn. My grass used to be yellowish with balding so I went to the garden section and picked this product up since it is the summer and it just makes sense. Within a week and half my lawn revived and greener than ever with lush. I've already recommended it to my co-workers and I plan to use the Winterguard in the Fall then Turbuilder with Hatls in the spring. My wife said i'm going crazy with the lawn and the frequent visits to HD. Everyday you come home from work and right before you pull in to your driveway, would'nt you want to come home to a beautiful sight? August 5, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Time to apply it when the dogs start itching During the summer, the bugs eventually get my dogs itching. That's when I know it is time to apply Turf Builder Summerguard. (This review was submitted as a sweepstakes entry or is a review of free product.) January 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by No Yellowing I have been using Scott's fertilizer for Southern Lawns for several years and I like the no yellowing characteristic. Did you ever watch the TV show "Home Improvement" with Tim Allen? I am like the character Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor. I think more is better, more fertilizer, more power etc. I always use 2 or 3 times the recommended amount and no yellowing. That is the mark of a good slow release fertilizer. Try over fertilizing with a cheap brand and you will get yellowing. Now where can I get that lawn mower with MORE power? LOL I started my new lawn in January while other lawns were still dry like straw so that I would have a nice filled in lawn by summertime. It took a lot of water because there was no rain during the winter. My lawn is in the foreground in the picture and my neighbors lawn is in the background. There are a lot of brush fires during the winter. July 16, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Turftbuilder yet! Haven't had a decent yard in 10 years since excavating. Seeded in the fall, applied Scotts fertilizer in spring and summerguard in late June. Not picture perfect yet, but after applying winterguard, I expect a stunning yard next year. My yard is mostly fill dirt. If I'd had top soil, I'm confident it would look stunning now... not that it doesn't considering the quality of dirt. August 21, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by this product killed my lawn I have had the same negative experience as other reviewers. I applied the product correctly and my lawn turned yellow and died within days. I have been using a professional lawn service and even they have not been able to get grass to grow X 3 months. Avoid this product!! November 23, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by setting is not correct I have been using Scotts' product for 13 years. always used one bag to cover about 13,000 sq. ft. spreading it with Scotts Edge guard #13 years old#. This past August I did the same and followed the setting recommended on the Summer guard bag. Half way through, the bag was finished and I had to buy another bag. I thought this year product might be different. Two weeks later my lawn almost entirely is yellow. I don't know if the setting is for new spreaders and mine is too old or the setting recommended on the bag is wrong. I still believe in Scotts products but I won't buy Summer Guard again. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Does what is says! I live in Charlotte where Fescue is King but also an expensive grass to maintain. I have been transitioning my yard over to zoysia for the past 3 years and its 90% zoysia at this point. I put the summer-guard down and my yard has exploded, and is getting greener by the month while everyone else's (fescue) yard is becoming more brown with the summer heat. Though zoysia is a summer tolerant grass. Zoysia is beautiful when I actually want to be outdoors, and not typically green in the cold season when Im not using my yard like fescue. This product has helped my zoysia thrive, with keeping bugs at bay and retaining moisture to help keep it green. I definitely recommend this product... July 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by with Summerguard: best after summer lawn. I've used Scotts products over the past 50 years. I always had the best lawn on the street, but at times, had some problems after the summer. Last year, after using Summerguard, had the best lawn after the summer. The watering and rainfall were no different than previous years, the only difference was Summerguard. There was no wilting, no burnout, no orange-reddish fungus. Even my wife commented on how good the lawn looked, and she's my biggest critic. So what else is new. Thanks for your great products.
