Customer Questions & Answers

Does the color stay black or how quickly does it fade

Asked by: tweedie
I bought 20 bags of the black mulch in May and the color washed out the very first rain storm. At $2 a bag I guess you get what you pay for. I would have thought a Scott's product would be much better. Definitely not worth your time to put it down and then have to buy a better product like Vigoro. I bought 20 bags and it has lasted all summer. I certainly won't buy a Scott's product again.

I have used this mulch multiple times on my customers’ yards after doing either garden maintenance or during tree or shrub planting. The quality is very good, but if you need more than 1 yard of mulch this product isn't economical Pros: *If you get it on sale for 5 for $10, it’s a good deal *Keeps its color for awhile *Keeps the weeds down *Nice color and smell Cons: *If you pay full price, it just isn't a good deal unless you only have a small area to cover. I mean, since it’s either somebody's ground up tree or lumberyard byproducts, it doesn’t need to cost over $3.50 per bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Update on my frist review DO NOT GET MULCH WET for 24hrs after laying I reviewed this black mulch last month and asked Home Depot to remove my review because it wouldn't allow me to update of edit. I first gave this mulch a one star because it lost color right after I water the plants after laying the mulch in my yard. This is what I learned. DO NOT WATER MULCH FOR 24hrs. This mulch is wet when it comes out of the bags. Allow it to dry 24 hrs after installing and then water your plants. There is no instructions that tell you this, I came by it from trial and error. The color did not change and I am very happy to report after a month of watering plants in the mulch the color is still as dark as when I first purchased it. I hope this helps others in the future.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from contruction debris Stuff is junk!! Found carpet tack strip nails in my mix and it is all clumped together. Even after raking it and trying to flatten it out it clumps back together. Will never buy again! I work at home depot and will not recommend this to my customers anymore. Use a truck or trailer and go to the local landscape place and get a couple scoops of real hardwood black mulch. Photo attached shows difference. The lighter chunkier stuff is the scotts.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Where did the color go? I took advantage of the 5 for $10 Memorial Day sale and bought 15 bags. I was covering areas where I had put another brand of red mulch last year. We had a short but medium to heavy rain two days later (1/2 inch in 8 hours). In all the areas that were directly exposed the color bleed so badly that it looks gray; as if it has been there for over a year. The year old red in a couple of spots I didn't get to looks better. Neighbors that had a black mulch product put down by landscapers looks fine by comparison. I stopped buying Scott's grass seed because the germination rate was poor versus much cheaper brands, now I'll never buy their mulch again regardless of the great price as it too much work to put it down and get such a washed out result.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quality of Color Product not so Good but Scott's Co. is GREAT! Most of the time I do my research and read customer reviews, but this Team I relayed on the Great Folks at Home Depot. Boy was I surprise with when I saw the Mulch the next day after a light rain overnight. Like most folks hear I can attest to the color fading. ALL HOPE is NOT lost as Scott is a GREAT Company. I contact Home Depot and they deferred to Scott @ 888-270-3714 and they created a CASE# for me to mail in my receipt to get a FULL REFUND. BTW, the customer service is GREAT and FRIENDLY. No one is perfect 100% of the Time as in this product but the Company is FANTASTIC so I will continue to stay loyal to the Scott Products. I hope this helps anyone that is going through what a lot of us experienced with this product.

It rained on Monday after the product had been down about 12 hours. I now have gray mulch. I spent my weekend replanting and mulching this bed and it looked great. It now looks terrible. I was concerned with the amount of black coming off on my hands. Note: wear gloves. My concern was warranted. This black does not stay on product. Also, there were too many big pieces of wood for my liking. Would not buy this again. I would not give this product one star but I don't have that option.

This is the worst mulch we have ever had. The color is awful. Is is not black. It is dark brown with a little black mixed in. The mulch itself is very coarse. we pulled out wood pieces of 6-8 inches in length and 1 1/2 inches in diameter. We thought about taking it back but we didn't feel like loading a truck load back on the truck. I would not recommend this at all.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from cheap and still not worth it put this mulch down and in less than 36 hours the color was gone the second night we had light rain (barely more than steady drizzle) now there is a straight line where the edge of the roof is with no color at all what's left just looks like ground up construction demolition (no nails, but broken wood bits) DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME
