Questions & Answers

Does the color stay black or how quickly does it fade

Asked by: tweedie
No. The color was added so it will fade away under normal circumstances in a season. Good bark is made from hemlock and has a natural dark color which lasts longer, with no splinters and you don't have to worry about artificial dye ending up in your seafood. Natural products folks, not processed like all of that fake, low fat/nonfat food people stuff their faces with. Sad.

I need 1 1/2 yards of mulch. How many bags shoule I purchase?

Asked by: Geeg
That depends on how thick of a layer you want and how thinly you spread it. The Scotts product manual states, for 3" depth (recommended), 1 bag will cover 8 square feet, 2 bags covers 16 sq ft, 3 covers 24, 4/32, 5/40, 6/48, etc. There is a link to the manual on this product page. If you've already determined you need 1.5 cubic yards, then you only need to convert cubic yards to cubic feet to know how many bags you need. If you Google CUBIC YARDS TO CUBIC FEET a handy conversion calculator will appear on screen. I took those steps and the calculator states 1.5 cubic yards equals 40.5 cubic feet. So, since each bag is stated to be 2 cubic feet, you'll need 20-21 bags to get 1.5 cubic yards of mulch. To be clear, according to Scotts, 20-21 bags (1.5 cubic yards) should be enough to cover 160-168 SQUARE feet at 3 inches thick. I'm not sure how large an area you need to cover and/or how you came up with needing "1 1/2 yards of mulch" so I can't say for sure if 20-21 bags will in fact be enough for your project.

How many cubic feet are in a yard of mulch?

Asked by: Grace
If you Google CUBIC YARDS TO CUBIC FEET you will see a handy calculator. Type in 1 for the cubic yard and it shows 27 as how many cubic feet is equal to 1 cubic yard. Many calculators like these can be found on Google and will help you with many projects. Need to know how many square feet in an acre? Google ACRES TO SQUARE FEET, and so on. ;)

I just ordered a pallette. There are currently 60 bags shrink wrapped on a pallette (June 2017).

I bought 40 Bags of this, upon loading I thought a lot of the bags were heavier than normal. Now a few weeks after puting out the mulch & a little rain I have found small chunks of CONCRETE!. It looks like the chunks are ground up highway. I am so upset, now I'll be spending days on my hands and knees removing this! THERE is SO much CONCRETE. I must contact Home depot to get this resolved!

I have used this mulch multiple times on my customers’ yards after doing either garden maintenance or during tree or shrub planting. The quality is very good, but if you need more than 1 yard of mulch this product isn't economical Pros: *If you get it on sale for 5 for $10, it’s a good deal *Keeps its color for awhile *Keeps the weeds down *Nice color and smell Cons: *If you pay full price, it just isn't a good deal unless you only have a small area to cover. I mean, since it’s either somebody's ground up tree or lumberyard byproducts, it doesn’t need to cost over $3.50 per bag.

Obviously this mulch has come along way because I am very pleased with the quality. I was concerned with all the previous reviews and then realized the most popular review was years ago. I ordered 60 bags when it was on sale for 5 for $10 and I did not have any debris or strange objects in the bags. The color looks great as of now - it has only been a week. I definitely recommend for smaller jobs or larger jobs when on sale. It's tough to justify the price when it is not on sale because it ends up cheaper having it professionally delivered if you need more than 2 yards. Hope this helps! :)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from white mold/fungus growth At first glance, this looked like a good product. My impression of Scotts products have always been good, but this damages their reputation in my opinion. I bought 20 bags from my local HD store. 7 of the bags contained heavy mold/fungus growth. Several additional bags were found to have some strands of white residue, which really took away from the nice black color. I couldn't tell if that was also fungus/mold, as these easily wiped off when i rubbed the pieces of mulch together with my fingers (dont worry, i definetely wore gloves). I will be calling Scotts customer service, as I am not satisfied. Hard to return opened bags of mulch. Word of advice - inspect the bags when you buy them at the store. Check to nake sure there are no signs of foreign growth.

I don't know for sure if they improved this much since then; but, I can tell you that the black color is lasting a lot longer than the expensive black mulch that the landscaping contractor used on my yard. I bought some of the Scotts Earthgro Black Mulch to patch some areas where I removed some bushes and other areas I just wanted to make look better after the contractor left. The Scotts Earthgro Black Mulch was blacker and not ground as fine (which I prefer because it lasts longer). It was better than the contractor's much. I am very happy with the Scotts Earthgro Black mulch. I bought eleven bags of it and I very highly recommend it. See my photos.

This mulch is tree bark chopped into chunks and not fine as most people prefer. However I personally like the "chunk look" mulch when its all laid down and I believe it does not blow away as quickly as the "fine" mulch. I read somewhere not to water the mulch (black) within the 1st 24 hours to avoid color loss. I followed that method and 2 months later the color has held up even after about 3-4 major thunderstorms. Overall I'm pleased with Scotts Earthgro Black mulch and will continue to use this type of mulch.

The plants are happy and my weeding is simple. Of all the bagged mulch on the market this one has a great feel, easy to spread, easy to hand place and no stain to the ungloved hand which does not wash off simply. Hereafter I will get the Scotts and feel confident it was done properly with the best material.

Bought on a July 4th promotion, and was actually less expensive than purchasing 2 yards of bulk mulch from the local greenhouse. Second time I've purchased Earth Grow mulch in past three years; find it to be good quality.
