It lasts about a week or two and then fades to gray. Even shorter if there is a rainstorm. The only good news is that since it fades so fast it blends in with the previous year's mulch in areas I missed or could not cover completely. But do not expect the color to be as vivid as in the bag all season long.

The mulch does not hold its color. But you are paying $2.00 a bag for it. It covers the ground and keeps the weeds down.but I agree with all other posts, it washes away first rain. I tried it twice.

I'll likely try something different next year, but it's hard to beat the price when it's on sale 5 for $10. The pics below are from the day I put it down vs. 10 days later - after 1 rain shower and a watering. There hasn't been much rain in New England this summer so I'm guessing what hasn't faded will be light come next spring. Read Less

A yard (volume) is one cubic yard
3ft * 3ft * 3ft = 1 cubic yard
27 cu ft = 1 cubic yard
40.5 cu ft = 1.5 cubic yards
40.5 cu ft divided by 2 cu ft per bag = 20.25 bags

Most bags will give you that info. In mine, there were 2 cubic feet, but that is just the bag volume, that is not how you would spread it. It depends on how thin you lay it out. For me, one bag went a really long way. In the photo I posted, that took me two bags.

Rated 2.9 out of 5 by 394 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Colored Mulch for the Money I use this mulch everywhere in my yard. I always use black because the color slowly degrades to a natural looking dark gray. The problem with seeking a mulch that never discolors is that you're asking for trouble with harsh chemical dyes. Such dyes can be harmful to your plants, not to mention using it around your vegetable garden. I like the fact that Scotts uses natural plant based dyes, and never uses construction based wood that can often contain toxic chemicals like copper arsenate, lead, and other nasty things. I think it's the right balance between appearance, quality, and cost. April 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Color rinsed off after 2 hours I'm so disappointed. We have put down 75 bags of this black mulch and the color rinsed off 2 hours later. It is now a mixture of black, brown, and blonde colored mulch. I have another 45 bags which I will return to the store where purchased. I have always used Scott's products and participate in their lawn care program. Most frustrating is not only the money spent but the time and effort expended on this project. May 1, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't buy I bought 50 bags on sale put it out wh had a week of rain went out to look at it and the mulch faded it states on the bag the color lasts 12 months it did not even last one week. I feel it was a a of 100 dollars I will never buy this again. And do not recommend it. May 6, 2016

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by contruction debris Stuff is junk!! Found carpet tack strip nails in my mix and it is all clumped together. Even after raking it and trying to flatten it out it clumps back together. Will never buy again! I work at home depot and will not recommend this to my customers anymore. Use a truck or trailer and go to the local landscape place and get a couple scoops of real hardwood black mulch. Photo attached shows difference. The lighter chunkier stuff is the scotts. April 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Maryland Spring 2016 Much Higher Quality Than Years Past Fine consistent texture with no wood chunks or bark. Very easy to distribute with no clumping. I've got a 120 foot by 50 foot property with a house in the middle, and I've gone through 24 bags on the raised flower beds around the house and back yard. My plants love it and the neighbors comment very favorably. Please maintain this level of quality. April 13, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Fades Fast! I bought 15 bags while it was on sell and put it out in the flower beds The following week I picked up another 15 bags and when I went to fill it in you can see how much the mulch faded in 1 week. The bag says it has a 12 month color guarantee. I would not recommend this product. April 12, 2016
