Customer Questions & Answers

R there weed seeds in Scott's Earthgro red mulch? I have enuf problems w/ weeds w/out adding to it. Thank you

Asked by: Anonymous
ddmcconn" I've never had that problem with it. If you use enough it'll help keep down the weeds. That's why I use it. I hope that helps, Hank

Splinters

Does this pine mulch have nasty splinters like fir mulch?
Asked by: Anonymous
Anonymous: Gloves! Without them you'll tear your hands up. I pour it from the bag into The Home Depot's orange five gallon bucket and spread that way, but unless you hands are crusted with callouses you're going to need first aid with out a good pair of heavy gloves. I hope that helps, Hank

Does it attack bugs or wil I find bugs in it?

The answers to the stated questions do not come up.
Asked by: Anonymous
Sue: I'm assuming you mean does it attract bugs and that answer is conditional. If you water it it makes a great haven for earwigs and other pests but when I converted to drip irrigation and only the plant's roots got water the bugs went away. To where? I don't know but they never came back. I hope that helps, Hank

Pretty Great red mulch I have used this mulch multiple times on my customers’ yards after doing either garden maintenance or during tree or shrub planting. The quality is very good, but if you need more than 1 yard of mulch this product isn't economical Pros: *If you get it on sale for 5 for $10, it’s a good deal *Keeps its color for awhile *Keeps the weeds down *Nice color and smell Cons: *If you pay full price, it just isn't a good deal unless you only have a small area to cover. I mean, since it’s either somebody's ground up tree or lumberyard byproducts, it doesn’t need to cost over $3.50 per bag. The red color looks great when used around pink Crepe Myrtle trees.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Differing Quality of Mulch I purchased 50 bags of Red. The Home Depot was very helpful in pulling the bags and loading into my truck. The offered to load a pallet and this was to much so they hand stacked. The product was unloaded and installed at my house and while it looked okay dropping the bags around the house the much doesn't match. Some product looks like ripped up wood products, some looks like chipped trees and some looks like chipped tree bark. The kids that I paid did not really pay attention to the differences in the product but it looks bad. As seen in the pictures there is variability in the colors of red as well.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO ANSWER FINE IF NOT PLEASE LET THE VENDOR KNOW IT'S BROWN AND IT WILL NEVER BE RED.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Buy the Red Mulch !!!! I purchased 60 bags of red mulch. 45 bags had great red color, but the other 15 were brown in color not red as they were marked. I had to pay a friend $60 to pick up the mulch and I wasn't going pay him to return it too.. Because the color match was so bad I had to go back and purchase 5 more just so I could color match the mulch I had put down on the other side of my yard. So what I have now is a good red color on one side and a brown color on the other side of my yard. Not what I wanted and not what I thought I had purchased. This product isn't what I thought. I thought Scotts products were "great"; however, I was wrong. It's simply AWFUL !!!!!!!!!!

Earthgrow's Red Mulch was something my Ag. teacher friend always recommended. He claimed it cooled the soil and helped reduce weed growth. He preferred the red color, especially around tomatoes. I use it my garden and the reason I only give it four stars is because most folks don't use it correctly. Here's an example: A neighbor complained about a weed problem in an area where nothing else would grow. We have poor clay soil. I suggested he try mulch in that area. He bought only one bag and spread so thin that in some places you could still see the ground. Needless to say he still had a weed problem because the weed seeds still made it down to the clay soil below and sprouted. Scott recommends turning over the top inch of mulch every couple of months to prevent wind blown weeds seeds from getting enough light to germinate. You need a 2 to 3 inch layer to protect and cool your soil. A two cubic foot bag should cover about eight square feet with a layer about three inches thick.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from mixed feelings After reading some of the reviews which my gut told me not to purchase, but I went ahead and bought 90 bags for spring gardening. I thought those could have been bad batches and the problems fixed in production so future batches/lots would have been corrected. Price was great but again, you get what you pay for. I feel very disappointed because as you see in the picture the red mulch looks great (it is a deep red color) while it is wet inside the bag. After distributing on our yard you can see from the picture that red looks more like brown after 24 hrs. there is a big discoloration difference. Wow did not expect that from Scott, I expected more quality control and a better product. Bag says 12 months guarantee for color, Which one the red or the brownish one i got after 24hrs? I do not blame Home Depot for this, but if I was the procurement manager for Home Depot with the Scottt account, I re-consider.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from color and hoe much mulch I feel like it's wrong to say it covers 3" deep and 8 ft with one bag . we used 40bags at our apartment building. and still need to buy like 20 more just to finish the sides. let's not even add up the ones to the front yard yet! color, pshhh. don't get me started. it was a beautiful red when we put it in. it rained all the color washed out of the 3 bags we put in. we put the other bags today and it just looks off. the other one we put the day before looks faded by the Sun.we are SO UNSATISFIED! Of coarse we still are going to buy more cuz we already put in more than half today.
