Does the mulch attract bugs?

Asked by: Anonymous
Georgia Red Ants love this stuff! I have to treat the mulch with fire ant poison at least 2 X a season.

ddmcconn" I've never had that problem with it. If you use enough it'll help keep down the weeds. That's why I use it. I hope that helps, Hank

The answers to the stated questions do not come up.

This is an all natural product made out of wood. Scott's does not place any insecticides on their product and why would you any way. this is all natural and many people do not use insecticides in nature due to the fact insects are beneficial

Splinters

Does this pine mulch have nasty splinters like fir mulch?
Asked by: Anonymous
Anonymous: Gloves! Without them you'll tear your hands up. I pour it from the bag into The Home Depot's orange five gallon bucket and spread that way, but unless you hands are crusted with callouses you're going to need first aid with out a good pair of heavy gloves. I hope that helps, Hank

2 cu. ft. Red Mulch is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 661.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Color very disappointing In total I purchased 80 bags of this red mulch. As I laid out the bags and opened them up I realized almost half were not even red although the bags clearly said red mulch, half were almost a brown color. The shred was also very inconsistent like others have said. I normally go to a local supplier and fill my trailer (which is cheaper) but decided to try the Scott's this year for ease of it being bagged. I'll not be using this product again and do not recommend if you are wanting a bright red mulch. Even on sale this was a disappointing purchase.

I bought 20 bags of this mulch a couple days ago and then bought 30 more yesterday. Each one by itself looks fine, but the colors are so completely different that it makes the landscaping look poor. One is a vibrant red color and the other is just a red tint. I need another 50 bags to finish my landscaping but who knows what color I'll actually get when I start spreading it. If you only need a bag or two for a small area you are probably fine, but if you have a larger project then I wouldn't recommend this product.

I have used this mulch multiple times on my customers’ yards after doing either garden maintenance or during tree or shrub planting. The quality is very good, but if you need more than 1 yard of mulch this product isn't economical Pros: *If you get it on sale for 5 for $10, it’s a good deal *Keeps its color for awhile *Keeps the weeds down *Nice color and smell Cons: *If you pay full price, it just isn't a good deal unless you only have a small area to cover. I mean, since it’s either somebody's ground up tree or lumberyard byproducts, it doesn’t need to cost over $3.50 per bag.

Earthgrow's Red Mulch was something my Ag. teacher friend always recommended. He claimed it cooled the soil and helped reduce weed growth. He preferred the red color, especially around tomatoes. I use it my garden and the reason I only give it four stars is because most folks don't use it correctly. Here's an example: A neighbor complained about a weed problem in an area where nothing else would grow. We have poor clay soil. I suggested he try mulch in that area. He bought only one bag and spread so thin that in some places you could still see the ground. Needless to say he still had a weed problem because the weed seeds still made it down to the clay soil below and sprouted. Scott recommends turning over the top inch of mulch every couple of months to prevent wind blown weeds seeds from getting enough light to germinate. You need a 2 to 3 inch layer to protect and cool your soil. A two cubic foot bag should cover about eight square feet with a layer about three inches thick.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I guess brown is the new red and black! I have always been a Vigoro customer but thought what the back mulch is mukch. How very wrong I was. i purchased nearly 60 bags of mulch(red and black) and no happy at all. When I opened the res bags almost every bag had large areas of white in them. Have no clue what this is, but after a pretty bad storm and a lot of rain well it's a brown color now. The black mulch looked real good after I put it down, but lime the red it is now a greyish faded out black and some even a brown color. Very disappointed with this product. Will be using Vigoro from now on. Don't waste your money on this stuff even if it is on sale for $2.00/bag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks vibrant! awesome coloring and great coverage for $2 a bag. My back patio looks amazing. Ignore the "It doesn't provide expected coverage" reviews. I think some people clearly do not understand cubic foot measurements. 3 bags covered nearly 50 square feet.

The mulch was rich in color, consistant in color and texture for all 145 bags I bought for the front and back yard. Bought it at $2 per bag, best deal on the quality of the mulch.

Not only it was molded, with awful smell of humid mulch, and discolored with a 30% of white pieces in every bag, but the pieces looked like chunky roots. It was an example of somebody trying to sell junk under a strong brand. Because of it, I am thinking twice about buying Scott products. the problem is that when you put the mulch, it is almost impossible to take it out afterwards! I had to buy some Vigoro and try to put it on top to hide the bad Scott product!
