I've been purchasing this for at least the last 5 years thinking that it was the least expensive way to go for good quality well shredded mulch in a bag. I must have bags because of town house parking pads. No More! I'm tired of the large chunks of wood that don't decompose. A couple pieces looked like it came from the lumber yard. In an attempt to shred and color it, they fell short of their efforts. Imagine seeing a 'saw cut' piece of 'mulch' in my bag. Grrrr.... This year they are more expensive then going to a local nursery when you compare mulch, tax and delivery. I'm going to shop at a Mom and Pop store and keep their business growing and local economy healthy....

Very different from typical brown mulch - this is much finer and more fibrous. I think this has more surface area to hold and slow the water down to limit run off. It has an interesting black color which creates an interesting offset from the typical brown. I think it will make an interesting visual contrast for your garden. I used this in a remote corner of my property, where it is dry and the water is not so good. It should also be interesting to see in 12 months how well it holds its color. I do like the initial color and product

Be careful where you use this product. I put it around a 6 month old 3 foot Steed Holly and now the Holly is dying. I took the mulch out immediately but I'm afraid the bush isn't going to recover. I removed the mulch from my other beds for fear of killing my other landscape bushes.
Afterwards, I read the small print on the bag and it says not to use near walls or smaller places. I guess its the weed prevention chemical that isn't healthy for young bushes. Too late for my plant but they should make it very apparent on the bag that it can be toxic to landscape.

Rated 1 out of 5 Poor color retention, appearance
I have used this product in the past with great satisfaction. Scott's brand was worth paying a premium for given the superior quality and color retention.
However, this year I purchased 25 bags and noticed
- a moldy spots in a few bags
- color was not as dark as in previous years
- within a matter of a couple of weeks the product began to lose a significant amount of color.
- size of the wood chips seemed much larger
Very disappointing given the time, cost and effort to purchase and apply the product.
I hope the quality issue is limited and will be resolved quickly.
