Dave, There may be a little confusion with the words Turfbuilder & Winterguard. Turfbuilder is Scotts term for a good healthy lawn. You will find the word Turfbuilder on the majority of Scotts fertilizers. WinterGuard on the other hand is a Scotts designed fertilizer to feed the root system during the winter season. In my case this will allow my Southern St. Augustine to spread its runners when the blades have stopped growing or even turned yellow after a hard frost or freeze. Come Spring my grass is way ahead of those who chose not to "winter-rise." The green bag you referred to is normally used in late Spring or early Summer. If you feel there is no significant differences in the N-P-K ratios, then I would use as I have suggested above, unless there is a noticeable price difference.
Good Luck!

If I understand your question, you want to apply Scott's Turf Builder in the Fall to give your St. Augustine roots a shot-in-the arm during the winter. That is what it is designed for. I don't believe it will do anything to the crab grass, except maybe give the good grass a leg up come Spring. Go to your Home Depot between now and Spring and read the directions on Scott's Bonus S, which both feeds and Read More

Both products, in my opinion and experience over many years, work great, if used as directed.

Answer:
We suggest applying Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard Lawn Food as the last feeding of the lawn between September and early November. It is best to apply it prior to the first heavy frost. We recommend that you do not apply Turf Builder WinterGuard Lawn Food once the ground freezes or after the grass is dormant for the winter. Answer:
JD, I always try to cut my grass a day or two prior to applying Winterguard. Since it doesn't have to be watered immediately, like the Spring/Summer fertilizer, I would say a day or two. Even better, when you are due for the next mowing. I would think it needs to settle down to the soil and preferably start dissolving prior to the mowing traffic.

Hi Gary.

Normally, you can apply a fertilizer to your lawn every 2 months, but since you will have a more delicate and newer grass in your lawn, using less or waiting another 4 weeks before you make your application of more fertilizer would be best.
I would wait and also use a slightly lower setting on your spreader to avoid over fertilizing your lawn.
Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Based on Past Experience Wintergard in past years has been valuable in developing a good. green over-winter lawn and I plan to use it again this year. It's somewhat ridiculous to ask me to rate last week's purchase since It will take a while to evaluate the product I'll be using this Fall. September 6, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Home Depot Online Description Does Not Match Actual Product At The Store Home Depot's Online Description is 14.2 lbs but actual product is 12.5 lbs. Bought Online - got to store - compared printed out description to what the people in pick-up gave me. Didn't match. Walked out to Lawn Dept. and was shown that that was all they had. They informed me it was the same item number/SKU number. Took the item (what else was I going to do?). But what really annoyed me is that the employees didn't seem concerned that the online description didn't match what they had in store. No one stepped up and declared: "I will contact the website team and have them fix this". Didn't seem to care! Maybe they go through this often and are numbed? As of this review, the online description is STILL incorrect! September 15, 2015

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best fall/winter fertilizer I have used Scotts before but didn't like it until now. I applied in September and within a few weeks my lawn was thick and green!!! Wow. Usually Scott is a disappointment October 9, 2015

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product It does its job. Not too expensive. Good quality. Easy application December 29, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Green Grass Scott's Winterguard clearly helps the lawn turn greener, and gives a strong root system over the winter so the grass grows better all year. I have used it for many years and have the best yard in the neighborhood. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Scott's Quality Products Follow Scott's lawn maintenance plan via their website. Home Depot carries the needed lawn application products to maintain a healthy and green lawn through-out the year. The winterguard application is the last application for the dormant season. Helps promote new growth and quick green-up when spring growing season arrives. December 8, 2015
