I live in Houston TX, what month is the best time to apply this winterguard on a st augustine grass?

Asked by: abe726
We live in Houston. I always winter fertilize my lawn the first weekend in November. My lawn is pretty spectacular and weed free. This stuff works.

Overseeding Fescue

Next week I'm over seeding my backyard and wanted to see if this would be a good product to use afterwards? If not do you have any suggestions? Thanks
Asked by: z06boy
Typically most people will use a start fertilizer when seeding. However, Turf Builder WinterGuard Fall Lawn Food will not interfere with germination and can be applied the same day. Be sure to keep fertilizer applications 6-8 weeks a part. If you have any additional questions, please call 877-220-3089.

When is the best time for over seeding?

Asked by: Anonymous
Fall is the best time to over seed your lawn. Depending on the area that you live could push the date either direction. But, Labor Day weekend is a good average date. Make sure you apply it about 6-8 weeks prior to the ground freezing. In the past, Winderguard used to work well with new long as it wasn't winterguard plus 2 that doubles as a weed killer. However, Scotts decided to change this product at most stores to be pretty much identical to the product that is sold in the spring. (you will pay about $10.00 more for this bag...I guess the color of the bag is more expensive...the contents are the same) So, you could use another brand of fertilizer that has a higher Potassium content. Potassium and a bit lower Nitrogen number. I hope this helps...

Customer Reviews

Turf Builder 15,000 sq. ft. WinterGuard Fall Fertilizer is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 376.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from yes lawn seems better already. Im following the "my Scotts lawn care plan" online. I used winter weed and feed, then Scotts halts crabgrass preventer, prior to this I have done nothing with the lawn, just moved to this house 2 years ago. Don't know if its this or the halts, but lawn is looking nice and green much better then ever.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product I started using WinterGuard last fall and happy how good my lawn looked in this spring. It seemed thicker and less weeds. I did a search of winter lawn fertilizers and found great article from Colorado State University said the most important nutrient for fall fertilizer was nitrogen and to use a concentration such as 25-5-5 or something similar. WinterGuard is 32-0-10 so it has the perfect blend of nitrogen for my bluegrass here in Colorado.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't trust the negative reviews Read through a bunch of reviews and saw the bad reviews and thoughts they were either one offs or wouldn't happen to me. I was wrong. Had a lawn that was doing great coming out of winter and wanted to give It a little boost. Two weeks later lawn is yellowing and thinning out. We have gotten plenty of rain so it isn't lack of water. Sucks as I had high hopes for the backyard this year. Guess I'll hope next year is better. Believe the negative reviews. I can and will happen to you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The results of using this product are WAY worth the costs, which are not bad. I moved into our house after we rented it for 5 years to a non-lawn caring individual. It was covered in years of old leaves and the grass was in small patches and dirt. Bad shape to say the least. I tried using cheaper products and had no luck with them. I started using all Scott products and within 2 weeks I was visually seeing huge growth and new St.Augustine grass coming up. My lawn will never see any other products, except from Scotts! Thank you Scotts team of engineer's!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It killed my lawns in 2 different houses. I tried this product last year on my first house. Then lawn turned yellow. This year on my 2nd house in different location, just a week ago. Same result! Yellow, spot to spot. So disappointed. Scott Lawn Food seems worked good but not this one. Do you have an answer?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this great product for fall. Every year my lawn goes brown in the heat and needs some reseeding each spring. Since I found this product and used it last fall this spring my lawn was thicker and greener than ever and no reseeding it all is green and thick. I also found it stood up better int the heat of summer. I also learned it is best to apply twice. once in Sept. and again after all the leaves have fallen and cleanup is done and last mow I reapply. I am happy my lawn stands up so much better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WinterGuard I applied the Winter Guard late fall thinking I was too late to protect our lawn. This product kept our lawn green all season and healthy. The winter was brutal for the MD area. I still don't believe how well this Winter Guard maintained our lawn. Other lawns looked like a desert while ours remained perfect. I will continue to use all Scott's product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from WINTERGUARD W/WEED CONTROL KILLED MY LAWN I've used Scotts fertilizers for years without ill effects. My lawn was doing very well going into Fall. Per Scotts' recommendation I decided to let it grow a bit longer than usual this past Summer and into Fall at 3" settings on my John Deere tractor. Observing dropping temps mid-September I thought I would give this product a try so that I would have a greener lawn throughout the Winter, give it boost before the final mow of the season one week following the application. What has ensued is disaster like I've never seen. Over an acre of what was a fine lawn is completely dead, gone, a muddy mess. I imagine will cost over $1,000 in labor and materials to recover/re-plant.
