Fall is the best time to over seed your lawn. Depending on the area that you live could push the date either direction. But, Labor Day weekend is a good average date. Make sure you apply it about 6-8 weeks prior to the ground freezing. In the past, Winderguard used to work well with new seed...as long as it wasn't winterguard plus 2 that doubles as a weed killer. However, Scotts decided to change this product at most stores to be pretty much identical to the product that is sold in the spring. (you will pay about $10.00 more for this bag...I guess the color of the bag is more expensive...the contents are the same) So, you could use another brand of fertilizer that has a higher Potassium content. Potassium and a bit lower Nitrogen number.
I hope this helps... Read Less

Answer:
Cool season grasses (Kentucky Blue, Rye and Fescue) should be seeded in the fall. It is best to seed when temperatures are no longer in the 90's and there is at least 30 days before the first hard frost. Warm season and transition grasses (Bermuda, Centipede, Zoysia) should be seeded in late to early summer after the danger of frost and when the ground temperatures are above 70 degrees.

Answer:
This product can be used until the ground freezes, if you have a cool season grass. It is not a good idea to feed the lawn too late in the year if you have centipede, Bermuda, or St. Augustine grasses.

Answer:
Hey Charlie. September is a great time to put down this fertilizer on warm season grasses like Bermuda or Zoysia, in your area. September or October would be a good time for Fescue grass.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by waste money, waste time Spent almost $50.00 at Home Depot, and waste time to try, but it didn't work at all February 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Winterguard This stuff is great! I him my yard with an aerator the over seeded. I then put on the winterguard and within two weeks, my grass was the thickest and greenest in the neighborhood. Already had a couple people ask what I did to get these results. You can still see the plugs in the yard from the aerator. September 12, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good feed for bermuda grass but caused goosegrass growth! I applied this product to my lawn at the beginning of summer - every four weeks. Lawn turned green in few days as advertised and then I started seeing Goosegrass and quack grass on my lawn. Now its everywhere!! I did not have this issue last year.. August 3, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Clumps of fertilizer makes it unusable This is not my first bad experience with Scotts fertilizer but it will be my last. Previously I bought a bag of fertilizer and upon opening a fair percentage of it was clumped together so with gloves I broke it apart prior to using. This year I carefully checked bag for punctures before buying and found none. I got it home started pouring it into rotary spreader and numerous large clumps were in the bag. This time the clumps were packed hard and responded like clay when trying to break apart. They wouldn't break into individual grandules. In fact all the fertilizers could be squeezed into clumps making passing through a rotary spreader impossible presently I'm attempting to dry the fertilizer out on plastic in my driveway. Fooled twice, not again. May 5, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Burned Lawn Had lawn which neighborhood was envious of. Applied this fertilizer Sunday late afternoon, Wednesday (after two waterings) chemical burns on lawn. September 23, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bags are NOT 42.3 lbs The bag size has been reduced from 42.3 to 37.5 lbs, thus it no longer covers 15000 sq ft as advertised. It only covers 13000 sq ft, when applied at 2.85 lbs/1000 sq ft. September 21, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product I use this Product because my lawn was yellow I promise you it turn green in 3 days . To get a green Lawn first Buy scotts weed and feed in The Spring time wait 6-8 weeks then put Turf builder down every 6 weeks. May 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Superior product ... outstanding value! In 43 years of home ownership, I've come to believe in Scotts products. While occasionally tempted with low-cost alternatives, I found Southern Lawn Food which has comparable price & superior performance. Regular use gave me a lawn that is one of the nicer yards in the neighborhood. It seems to promote existing and new grass growth, and with mowing on high settings, the lawn is thick and has choked out almost all weeds. Overall, I don't want to spend my life doing yard work. I don't have a "golf course" lawn. I just want a yard that looks good, easy to maintain, and a fun place for my grandchildren. Scotts Southern Lawn Food gives me that!
