Answer:
It does not need a spreader if it is a small area. I distributed mine by hand.

Answer:
My answer is no if "small" is truly small. That said, a small hand held spreader might be best. I've taken handfuls of seed for small areas and tossed it up gently in the air and let it fall to the ground to avoid clumping seed in one spot.

Answer:
It is recommended to use a spreader to apply grass seed, this helps to ensure even coverage. A hand held spreader works well for small areas. How much you use will depend on the square footage of the area you are covering. A 7 lb bag will cover 1,400 square feet of new lawn or if overseeding an existing lawn it will cover 2,800 square feet.

Can I use this plus weed and feed?

This question is from Turf Builder 7 lb. Sun and Shade Mix Grass Seed

We just bought a house and the yard is mostly grass (very weeded) but around the edge of the house and random spots in the lawn there are bare spots. Plus some spots we're planning to level and pull out bushes. Can I use this on the bare spots and the weed and feed on the regular grass to get rid of the weeds? Or should I just apply this everywhere? Or what would be the ideal remedy? Thx

Answer:
No you can't because the weed and feed will cause your seeds not to germinate (need to wait 4-6 weeks after your weed killer product). Unless you have a highly designed chemical compound that can differentiate grass seed from weed seed :)

Answer:
You can use the Turf Builder Sun and Shade Mix seed on any of the bare areas. Do not apply a weed control to the new seed until the new grass has been mowed at least 4 times. If applying Turf Builder Weed & Feed, you cannot reseed for at least 4 weeks after the application.

Answer:
No , you can not use weed and feed with new grass seed. you have to plant the seed and let it germinate . It is one or the other either new seed or fertilizer, perhaps fill bare spots with sod and then fertilize .

Answer:
While Birds do eat seed, our WaterSmart PLUS Grass Seed is not a preferred food item for birds and if they do eat it they will only eat a very small percentage of what was planted, leaving plenty to germinate and establish. While it is possible to cover the seed with a thin layer of soil or straw, we do not recommend covering the seeds with hay, plastic, wood mulch, or grass clippings.

Answer:
Scotts Turf Builder Sun & Shade Mix is a cool season grass mix of Kentucky Blue, Rye and Fescue varieties. Although it will grow in zone 8 it may not thrive. Warm season grass types may be better suited for the area.

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 982 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product I used a hand spreader to apply this to my bare yard for initial seeding and it worked quite well. I had to apply a second bag after a couple of weeks due to bare spots, most of those spots are filling in but I still have some work to do, considering this seed is not meant to fill in a brand new yard I think it did a great job. I live in a brand new neighborhood and I was the only person to not do either hydro seed or sod and my lawn looks as good, if not better than others who hydro seeded, plus it was less expensive. Seeding in my area of the country is not easy considering the high winds and inconsistent weather. One day it will be 35 degrees and the next it can be 85 degrees but I still managed the seed to grow with reasonable expectations. I have to mention that I did follow the directions as closely as possible, I had a fence up to block any wind, my sprinklers ran on a timer with no dry times/spots and I applied it during early spring when it didn't get overwhelmingly hot. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Did not germinate in perfect weather (and with a sprinkler system) Planted in accordance with the manufacturers instructions in perfect weather (cool damp spring in the Northeast, and I have an automatic sprinkler system). Very disappointing, because I have been a Scotts customer for as long as I have gardened. Now I have to spot sod in late May. May 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good product Easy to use product, easy to see where you have seeded. August 9, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by seed is ok This seed was used to try and fill in places where I had used other seed and a blanket to get it started. The blanket seed worked well, but I just didnt see this seed coming in to help thicken places like I thought it was going to do. And yes, it was watered well. July 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't spend the extra money Bought this product in hopes of good hardy germination. I thatched the soil surface, seeded and watered for 7 day. Nothing happened. Slowly gave up on watering and the blue seeds are still laying all over the dirt I spread them on un germinated. June 28, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not worth the money. I am very disappointed in this product. I bought 2- 7pound bags to spread on thinning areas in my yard with fresh soil and was also very careful about the watering. After 1 month there is no sprouting at all. Six different areas in total. I can see if one area did not do well but this was all areas. I have always been a fan of Scotts products but will now have to rethink it. All I am seeing is the blue seed sitting there. This product did know where near the job it was designed to do. July 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Grass Seed Good seed, raked it in and watered everyday and now about 7 days into this have a nice big patch of baby grass. During the heat of summer. July 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use! Turf builder 7 lb sun and shade mix grass seed was easy to use and I saw results quicker after having placed the seed in bare spots around my lawn. June 28, 2016
