Customer Questions & Answers

Can I use this plus weed and feed?

We just bought a house and the yard is mostly grass (very weeded) but around the edge of the house and random spots in the lawn there are bare spots. Plus some spots we're planning to level and pull out bushes. Can I use this on the bare spots and the weed and feed on the regular grass to get rid of the weeds? Or should I just apply this everywhere? Or what would be the ideal remedy? Thx
Asked by: rplilly
Don't use weed killer it will not allow the seed to germinate.

DO YOU HAVE TO USE A SPREADER TO APPLY GRASS SEED IN A SMALL AREA? CAN IT BE APPLIED BY HAND AND HOW MUCH?

Asked by: PEB22
It does not need a spreader if it is a small area. I distributed mine by hand.

will birds eat this Seed? do I need to put hay after seeding large area?

Asked by: Jay
While Birds do eat seed, our WaterSmart PLUS Grass Seed is not a preferred food item for birds and if they do eat it they will only eat a very small percentage of what was planted, leaving plenty to germinate and establish. While it is possible to cover the seed with a thin layer of soil or straw, we do not recommend covering the seeds with hay, plastic, wood mulch, or grass clippings.

Turf Builder 7 lb. Sun and Shade Mix Grass Seed is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 1000.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The proof is in the pics The proof is in the pictures. First pic is on Day 0, after prep and application. Second pic is at 2 weeks. Third pic is after 4 weeks. Scotts works perfectly, but you need to put in the time and prep correctly. There is no miracle seed that allows you to just "throw down seed" and water. This is the third time I've planted a lawn (or major portions of one) and the trick is in the prep. 1. Loosen the soil where you will be applying the seed. Make sure soil is loose at least 2" deep... not just the very top. 2. OVERSEED. Put down so much seed you do not see dirt. This is the one step I deviate from the "bag instructions". I believe more seed is better. 3. Work seed into dirt. This step is not included in the bag, but I believe it makes a huge difference. Working the seeds into the dirt provides cover and protection from the elements (sun, water, etc.). Don't work in too deep. Just a gentle mix. Yes, there will be seeds on the top of the dirt that aren't fully worked-in. It's ok. 4. WATER!!! For the lawn in this picture, I watered twice a day... once before work (say 500A) and once when I returned home (say 430P). I watered for about 15-20mins each time. Just until it was damp. The lawn pictured required this much water, since it is in direct sunlight all day and the top of the soil was dry by the time I returned home from work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Grass is growing In less than 7 days, blades of grass were growing in our empty patches. We followed the directions on the bag and used some top soil to cover very lightly. We made sure that the areas were watered lightly for the first few days, and watched the rain pattern as well. I have grass growing and filling in nicely. We timed the planting so the outdoor temperatures were less than 70 degrees, as grass grows faster in cooler weather. Great product. Very satisfied.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from only germinated then disappeared Our lawn is in Cincinnati, Ohio. Our backyard is North facing and during the summer month many deciduous trees from the neighboring yards shade it for most of the day. That's why I thought a shad mixture would be most appropriate. Very quickly the seeds germinated but then disappeared. Also the chemicals coating the seed are nasty. It's bright blue and smells awful.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Try another product I buy a bag of seed every year to fill in the spots for summer. Bought 2 bags and applied according to the instructions. Maintained per instructions and past experience. Not one spot sprouted and filled in. Very disappointed in the results not to mention the cost of the water. Have not had this problem in the past with other products.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not germinate I am very disappointed in this product. Perhaps 2016 was a bad batch, you don't seem to have many good recent reviews. My situation offers a comparison with no-name brand, un-coated grass seeds under the same growing conditions. I had a 7-foot apron around a new patio that needed seeding. The patio installer had thrown down some poor quality top soil, aforementioned plain grass seed and straw over it all in August. I diligently kept the soil moist and within 3 days had grass. I still had some patches (about 10%) that were bare, so bought this product and premium top soil (Scott's brand) to seed them. As before, I kept the soil moist. However 8 days later and there are only a few spots with 5 or less thin blades of grass coming through. Because of my experience I am forming the opinion that though the blue coating makes it easy for one to see the grass seed as it is applied, it makes it more difficult for them to germinate. I will not be buying this product again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scotts grass seed This is the second time i used this seed and having poor results again. The germination time is very slow, they claim 5-10 days, i'm seeing a minumim of 14 days and very slow growth. This time i bought their lawn soil and saw very little improvment. I'm going to e-mail scotts and complain.

I'll probably plant the seed after April 1st and have to wait several weeks for germination. Past experience with Scott's seed has been excellent.
