Customer Questions & Answers

Can I use this plus weed and feed?

We just bought a house and the yard is mostly grass (very weeded) but around the edge of the house and random spots in the lawn there are bare spots. Plus some spots we're planning to level and pull out bushes. Can I use this on the bare spots and the weed and feed on the regular grass to get rid of the weeds? Or should I just apply this everywhere? Or what would be the ideal remedy? Thx
Asked by: rplilly
Don't use weed killer it will not allow the seed to germinate.

My "lawn" is mostly clovers. I have no idea what grass seed was initially used about 9 years ago. Will grass grow in these circumstances If I rake yard first?
Asked by: Jett
It is important to prepare the seed bed so raking is a good first step. This will loosen the soil and remove some unwanted weeds or dead grass. Once your new grass is established it would be fine for you to apply a herbicide for any weeds that are currently growing. Call us if you need more information. Our number is 877-220-3089.

It does not need a spreader if it is a small area. I distributed mine by hand.

So far I have used this across my front and back yard expecting pretty good results. I may be impatient because it has only been two weeks. But the seed has not been growing at all. Maybe I did something wrong along the way but I followed the instructions on the back as well as possible and watered frequently. So far it looks like none of the seeds have germinated. I can see the seeds on some bare spots of my lawn not doing anything. Pretty disappointing considering I spent around $150 on seed expecting some good results if I put in the work.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scott's sun/shade Aerated, Scott's seed and fertilizer last fall and earlier this spring. Watered as recommended with sprinkler system. No germination in the fall or spring. When I say no germination I mean not one single blade. Either the blue coating or bad seed is preventing grass to grow. The expense of 80lbs of seed, airator rental twice, wasted time and labor and having now to do it all over again makes this product less then one star. Pass and buy a cheaper rye mix that will grow.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The proof is in the pics The proof is in the pictures. First pic is on Day 0, after prep and application. Second pic is at 2 weeks. Third pic is after 4 weeks. Scotts works perfectly, but you need to put in the time and prep correctly. There is no miracle seed that allows you to just "throw down seed" and water. This is the third time I've planted a lawn (or major portions of one) and the trick is in the prep. 1. Loosen the soil where you will be applying the seed. Make sure soil is loose at least 2" deep... not just the very top. 2. OVERSEED. Put down so much seed you do not see dirt. This is the one step I deviate from the "bag instructions". I believe more seed is better. 3. Work seed into dirt. This step is not included in the bag, but I believe it makes a huge difference. Working the seeds into the dirt provides cover and protection from the elements (sun, water, etc.). Don't work in too deep. Just a gentle mix. Yes, there will be seeds on the top of the dirt that aren't fully worked-in. It's ok. 4. WATER!!! For the lawn in this picture, I watered twice a day... once before work (say 500A) and once when I returned home (say 430P). I watered for about 15-20mins each time. Just until it was damp. The lawn pictured required this much water, since it is in direct sunlight all day and the top of the soil was dry by the time I returned home from work.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nope A couple sprouts of grass here and there in the areas I laid the grass seed for patch and repair but no real grass coverage yet. Perhaps it takes a while, but it as been three weeks. We have had rain almost daily and on days when there is no rain, I water twice a day, but no noticeable results. I would not buy again and will go back to using Pennington brand.
