You could however I wouldn't over load it with salt and I would make sure I was able to rinse it if possible after using it just like you should when using fertilizer.

Answer:
80 lbs is a bit much of a load. Remember, it's made of plastic and some metal, so 80 lbs might cause early failures. Remember, salt is highly corrosive to metals. The unit MUST be THOROUGHLY washed after every salt application or you will find rust, especially around the broadcast blade in the bin, the handle, and the axle areas.. I would say it would hold most, if not all, of an 80-lb bag.

Hey handyRY.
I use this spreader at my home depot store to salt the sidewalk and it worked great. It works best with dry salt. It will hold 80 lbs of salt.

You can take a small wood or metal screw and put through the impeller to reattach. Actually I would recommend you buy one that is made with steel. The dlx will continue to break.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great peace of equipment. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. Easy to use. The spreader works as it should. Easy to read settings, spreads out the product as it should. I would recommend this product. September 6, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Works well but ... I have owned this spreader for several years. It has worked well and held up well with the exception of the foam handle covering, which wasn't tough enough to last past year 2. The main complaint I have is with the shape of the hopper. The bottom of the hopper is relatively flat from side to side and not steep enough to feed the last couple of pounds of product into the chute. You have to rock the spreader back and forth as you walk to get the last of the fertilizer or whatever to drop into the chute area. Overall I'm satisfied with how it works. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by New spreader Big hopper and the Edgeguard works really well although only in one direction August 30, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by terrible quality Gear broke in first 15 seconds of use. Need to upgrade materials September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Turf builder spreader Good quality for the cost. Easy to use. Instructions printed on the side of the spreader, so you don't have to memorize an instruction booklet. Spreader is coordinated in the instructions with the instructions on the Scott turf builder products. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Spreader Only better if you can get someone else to do the work August 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Buy The fertilizer spreader is easy to set and works well when the grass is wet. It has a diverter which helps to minimize the amount of fertilizer you get on the pavement or sidewalk when applying. July 26, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Design is cheap and doesn't work well Purchased this based on the HD star rating and WOW was I misled. I used dry product and only enough for approximately 2000 sq ft. First problem is the lever that opens the base was stuck so I had to manually pull on the cable, but then it would get stuck in the open mood and dispense product where I didn't want it. Second problem is the hopper had problems turning after a pass or two. This made me stop dispensing, pour out the unused product, and hose down the spreader. I then dried everything and tried again only to run into the same problems. I took it back to HD the same day. When I explained why I was returning it the lady behind the counter gave me a smirk like she knew all about this product being a piece of junk. July 6, 2016
