Answer:
Put down Turf Builder halts early in the spring, just when the weather breaks to create a barrier for preventing crab grass in the summer and giving your lawn the fertilizer it needs to "wake up" and "green up" for spring. I put it down in late Feb in my southern home and late March in my northern home.

Hi Samy,
I'm Travis from The Home Depot. Thanks for visiting our site.
Halts is a pre-emergent that prevents weed seeds from germinating. Since crabgrass propagates from seed each summer, using Halts will help control this weed.
For crabgrass that is not controlled by the Halts, apply a post-emergent weed killer to control actively growing crabgrass. Look for the active ingredient QUINCLORAC.

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 1343 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Use this product to start off the year. I apply Scotts Turf Builder Fertilizer with HALTS CRABGRASS PREVENTER to my lawn every year. Even though I still have some crabgrass showing up here and there it is a lot more controlled and can be eliminated by hand. September 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Horrible Product with Lot of wet clumps I bought this products a couple of weeks ago from HD along with late spring application pack, it was a nightmare to work with from the moment I opened the bag. If at all possible avoid this nightmare and buy something different. The moment I opened the bag I could tell that it would be impossible to apply looking at the clumps it had, what surprised me was they were wet and solidified like rocks. It never passed thru the applicator with getting blocked every 5 seconds. I would highly recommend to stay away from this product. April 18, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Crabgrass all over I applied this product early March but my lawn was totally taken over by crabgrass in Aug. I was following the plan laid out below by Scotts. http://www.scotts.com/smg/goART3/Howto/when-to-feed-lawn/33500008 No where does it say that we need another application of crabgrass preventer after 3-4 months. Only after reading the negative reviews here I came to understand that another application is needed. Can you please clarify how to fit in another application of this product in the plan above? September 15, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Useless Having been born in Marysville Ohio and having several relatives who are lifelong employees of Scott's, it pains me to write this very negative review of this product. I was very excited to find this product as I hate dealing with crabgrass. I carefully applied the product and watered it in early in spring and waited for the results. Not only did it NOT prevent crabgrass it seems to have encouraged it!I have much MORE crabgrass than I've had in the past and worse yet it's growing down deep inside my Bermuda grass where it's difficult to reach. Not only did I waste money but I wasted time applying and watering this product in as well as the time I've had to spend weeding my yard. I cannot recommend this product. August 6, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Wet Fertilizer I purchased two bags at the sale price. Totall useless as it was wet and would not go thru my Scotts spreader April 18, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not what it used to be. It seems that none of the Scotts and Ortho products work as good as they once did. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] September 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by In one MN summer I've gotten nearly 100% control of my crabgrass. Great product. I love the idea of shopping online, making my purchase and then going to the store to pick up my order. It saves me time. April 17, 2012
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by This product simply did not work I spread Halts on my lawn as soon as the ground was thawed and right when I normally would spread the product I normally use. and by the time July came around My lawn was over run with crabgrass I will be going back to the other product from here on in. The only reason I tried Halts is everyone sells it and the other product has limited availability. August 22, 2016
