Customer Questions & Answers

can i use a spreader with this product and will it grow if it is just spread on top of the ground

Asked by: Action
I would not try to grow this or any grass seed by just throwing it on top of the ground. Rake the area, lightly break up the soil, and spread the seed. Then when it rains or when you lightly spray it with the hose the loose soil will become muddy and will cover the seed with a light layer of mud. I think that's the secret.

I laid a small area with about 3 lbs of seed and yet to see results after two weeks, am I doing something wrong?

Followed all steps and watered daily with no results. I did not lay any hay as I made sure to water and not let the seed burn. I previously power raked the whole yard with my zero turn mower and made sure it had a nice clean surface to adhere to
Asked by: Dbeis
I say wait another week. I don't remember exactly how long mine took to come up, but I'm pretty sure it was longer than 2 weeks... longer than I expected.

we just fertilized the lawn. Will using this product over fertilize my existing grass and kill it?

Asked by: Madi
We recommend that you allow 2 -4 weeks before applying Turf Builder Sun & Shade Mix since it does contain fertilizer and you have previously applied a fertilizer. Call us at 877-220-3089 if you need further information.

Turf Builder Grass Seed Sun and Shade Mix 7 lb. is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 1463.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scott's sun/shade Aerated, Scott's seed and fertilizer last fall and earlier this spring. Watered as recommended with sprinkler system. No germination in the fall or spring. When I say no germination I mean not one single blade. Either the blue coating or bad seed is preventing grass to grow. The expense of 80lbs of seed, airator rental twice, wasted time and labor and having now to do it all over again makes this product less then one star. Pass and buy a cheaper rye mix that will grow.

So far I have used this across my front and back yard expecting pretty good results. I may be impatient because it has only been two weeks. But the seed has not been growing at all. Maybe I did something wrong along the way but I followed the instructions on the back as well as possible and watered frequently. So far it looks like none of the seeds have germinated. I can see the seeds on some bare spots of my lawn not doing anything. Pretty disappointing considering I spent around $150 on seed expecting some good results if I put in the work.

This is my second year in a row I am trying to grow small lawn (500 sq feet) using this product and for the second time I am very disappointed. Last year only couple of patches of grass grew about 2-3 weeks after seeding. This year again there is no germination after 2 weeks. The ground was watered every day and temperatures were good, so I am sure that the lack of germination is caused by very bad quality of these seeds. Extremely disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The proof is in the pics The proof is in the pictures. First pic is on Day 0, after prep and application. Second pic is at 2 weeks. Third pic is after 4 weeks. Scotts works perfectly, but you need to put in the time and prep correctly. There is no miracle seed that allows you to just "throw down seed" and water. This is the third time I've planted a lawn (or major portions of one) and the trick is in the prep. 1. Loosen the soil where you will be applying the seed. Make sure soil is loose at least 2" deep... not just the very top. 2. OVERSEED. Put down so much seed you do not see dirt. This is the one step I deviate from the "bag instructions". I believe more seed is better. 3. Work seed into dirt. This step is not included in the bag, but I believe it makes a huge difference. Working the seeds into the dirt provides cover and protection from the elements (sun, water, etc.). Don't work in too deep. Just a gentle mix. Yes, there will be seeds on the top of the dirt that aren't fully worked-in. It's ok. 4. WATER!!! For the lawn in this picture, I watered twice a day... once before work (say 500A) and once when I returned home (say 430P). I watered for about 15-20mins each time. Just until it was damp. The lawn pictured required this much water, since it is in direct sunlight all day and the top of the soil was dry by the time I returned home from work.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nope A couple sprouts of grass here and there in the areas I laid the grass seed for patch and repair but no real grass coverage yet. Perhaps it takes a while, but it as been three weeks. We have had rain almost daily and on days when there is no rain, I water twice a day, but no noticeable results. I would not buy again and will go back to using Pennington brand.

This product might be good for small patches but as for reseeding a big lawn it leaves a lot to be desired. I followed all the directions on the bag and on Scott's web pages and the results are not what I expected. Did all the prep of the soil and added additional top soil... Watered 2 or 3 times a day per specs. Because the results are not what I want......will probably have to reseed .....probably with a different product
