You can turn the dial to the left approx half a turn as long as you turn it back to the right to the last number on your combination! This is called day lock. I recommend you experiment with this before locking your valuables in it n not wanting to go through the whole set of combination numbers again , hence the name day lock so you can turn the number slightly to the left lock the key. This prevents anyone from taking the key and unlocking it without knowing the last number. This way if you have the key only you are unable to unlock it without turning the combination back to the last number on the left. Easier then it sounds. My last number was 66 so I would lock the key and turn the number to the right to 12 anyone with the key could not open it including me unless I turned the number back to. 66 and used the key also. If you don't move the dial. you can use the key to lock and unlock the safe.. but if you move the dial after shutting and locking it. you'll have to use the combination to open it.. and if you also used the key to lock it you would have to use it also.. the key is a separate lock.

Yup... I found out the hard way that the key does not unlock the safe. Try and get in touch with the company to obtain your combination or a new set of keys and you'll have to guess when you can get access to your things locked in the safe.

Either there is one person in customer service at Sentry Safe handling requests or they've got tens of thousands of others who made the same assumption I did because you cannot get a hold of customer service to complete the process of obtaining a key or combo.
I'll bet there's a bunch of people trying to get their passports out of a locked safe 2 days before a trip and Sentry Safe is MIA... If you want a less harsh review of your customer service, it would be nice if you reconnected your phones so customers can call. Oh wait... the 2 times the call actually went through, I was on hold for 30 minutes before I had to hang up. If you're having a problem with your phones, please answer via email. Read Less

Answer:
This is a dual locking safe with key and combination. The key is NOT an override key and will not open the safe on its own. We recommend contacting Sentry Safe should you not be able to open your safe.

Answer:
Yes. I found the documents inside when unpacked to be damp to the touch but undamaged.. I understand this is the nature of the fireproofing materials. I placed a 3.0cubic foot desiccant pack inside to mitigate the moisture issue. I am also in a position where I can leave the safe open for an hour or so to release moisture.

Answer:
Moisture and temperature inside and outside the safe will effect the contents. I have used "dryable" dessicant packs for years and had no issues. You can find them everywhere and just dry them in the oven when needed.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor quality and worse customer service stay away another typical HD product. It is junk Junk, Junk and worse factory customer servcie ever! July 21, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Fireproof? A fireproof safe would have a steel combination dial and lever. If this so called fireproof safe was ever in a fire and the dial and lever melted how is one to open it? Something to consider when purchasing it. July 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by if they can This safe is the right size for what I need it for. I look at it if a thefts can carry it they can have it. PS good luck trying to walk off with this. July 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good price, works well, strudy. Found this same safe on Amazon, but priced less at HD. Just what we need for our small valuables and it fits inside a closet perfectly. April 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good for the money, and nice features Would be nice if the combination dial and handle were steel, but that seems to be out of the question at this price point. Works great, and the key adds a second level of security if that is helpful to you (if locked, you need both the combo AND the key to open, or you can leave "unlocked" so just the combo is needed). Also, I really wish it has a second set of bolts going into the frame on the hinge side. That would increase security greatly. I believe if someone could saw through the hinges the safe would come open. If the bolts were on both sides of the door then sawing off the hingle would not allow the door to open. May 2, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by product ok - customer service is not You must be very very careful with this safe because the key does not unlock the safe. It is a secondary lock. You have to have the combination in order to unlock the safe. If you lock it with the combination and then lock it with the key, you need BOTH the key and the combination to unlock the safe. I assumed the key unlocks the safe when I threw a few items in in a before going out of town. Now I need Sentry Safe to send me the combination. Yes.. seems like a stupid move but it's not a stretch for anyone to think a key unlocks something when the same key locks it. Confused? Me too but I'm sure not the first person to use something quickly and not thoroughly understand the directions. This sure is the worst issue I've ever had with quickly using an item without reading the instructions. So, the safe is secure.. My HUGE problem is with customer service. If you lose your key or don't have the combination, they have all the info online, which is great but once you pay the $20 for them to send you the combination and send them the notarized form, you're left sitting wondering if they received the it and how long it will take to receive the combination. They say it's 3-5 days to process the paperwork and send your combination out but what if you're missing something and the processing is delayed? They provide a customer service number but no one ever answers... ever. Call and call and call and you just stay on hold forever. If they're a big company as they appear to be, why have NO customer service. They encourage you to call and provide a phone number but it's useless to get anyone on the phone. When I purchase a product, I expect there to be halfway decent customer service. I have NEVER had a company not respond. So based on this, I would not recommend purchasing the safe because you seriously run the risk of locking your items inside and having a heck of a time getting in touch with customer service. Go purchase a safe where there is some assistance if you get locked out.... it's not asking for a lot.... April 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Functional Safe I purchased this safe for home use. It is a perfect size, spacious, sturdy and suitable for home needs. March 8, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by safe The only problem with the safe was that it had a dent on the side where it looked like it had been dropped. March 9, 2016
