Yes, this is a great feature. I thought you would need both a key and the combination, but this is not the case. The combination alone keeps the safe locked. If you want, you can also lock it with the key, in which case the combination alone will not open it.

One thing to keep in mind. The safe comes with a fixed combination, which means the default fixed combination cannot be changed. You can add additional combinations if you want, but still, the fixed combination remains. Therefore, if someone were to see you dialing the default combination, you would thereafter need to use the key if you want to be sure that person can't open the safe. I'm considering creating and using my own combination for just this reason since once the default is revealed, there's no changing it -- a key is then required if you want to be sure. Using the key each time would be a slight nuisance since the combination alone is just a two-second opening operaton. Read Less

Yes, a key is necessary only if you further lock the safe with a key. After the safe is locked, you can then use the provided keys to further lock the safe. If you use the key to lock, you need the key to unlock.

I am concerned with significant moisture and bad odor in the safe - why not fixed yet?

I bought the prior model and it has significant moisture and bad odor that we can't get rid of. I was about to buy this one (because I can't find receipt to return old one) but then saw all of the comments about moisture, mildew and bad odor, especially when bolted to floor. Now concerned there is a defect in all of these and not worth buying. Why can't you fix this problem? Thanks.

You need to use the dessicant pack included and either recharge or replace then at least twice a year. You also should open and air out the safe at least every two weeks.

Apparently the watertight integrity feature allows condensation to build up over time which can cause mildew and rusting. The solution is to keep a desiccant inside the safe.

it's b/c of their waterproof feature. traps on moisture. you know how some things you buy come with those little packs to soak up any moisture? get a bunch of those and toss it in. better than nothing.
the other thing to do is to open it every once in awhile and let it air out.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Inspired by hotels After using the digital safes in hotels we realized how much easier they are to use than our old combination tumbler style safe. You can program your own combination and change it when you like. September 6, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by This is NOT a theft proof safe only a fire proof. This is NOT a theft proof safe only a fire proof. google how to crack the SFW123GT. it takes 10 seconds and all you need is a magnet! Stay away if you want to protect any valuables! DO NOT BUY! August 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Good For Fire - Lasts 5 years max First of all this states that it is fire rated and not burglary rated. You are buying 50 pounds of fire retardant powder/foam with a thin metal coating. Anybody with a saw or crowbar can open that thing in less than 5 minutes...2nd of all...it has a motor to move the bolts. Mine lasted around 2-3 years. Then I had to call Sentry. They tell you to use a higher voltage battery ( 9 V ). That works for 1 or 2 attempts. Then you are back to the saw or other power tools. The only chance you have to slow down burglars is to bolt the safe down... but that voids the warranty. So it is useless.. December 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Performs Exactly As I Had Hoped I've had this safe for several months now and I'm extremely happy with my purchase. I bought this safe to store two handguns out of reach of my grand kids. I have it on the floor in the corner of my clothes closet and I've thought about bolting it to the floor, but haven't done so yet. I guess if I was robbed it would be fairly easy to carry out of the house, but I'm counting on my security cameras to prevent that in the first place. So my main use is to keep guns away from kids and to protect documents in case of a house fire. It was nice to be able to set my own personal digital combo code that was easy for my wife and I to remember. I've watched the videos of people busting off the door or using the magnet to open the safe and I'm happy that didn't discourage me from making the purchase. July 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Solid and now a peace of mind with this Fire Safe by Sentry! A very solid and roomy safe to keep all valuable items stored to save them from theft and fire. Easy to program with a secure number, and comes with an additional lock for double the protection. Everything lights up, keyboard, so it's easy to read and when you open the door, LED's light up the inside of the safe's cavity so you can locate an item. You have the ability to drill holes through the base so you can bolt it to the floor. May 24, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by This safe has a major flaw I saw on YouTube a video that a burglar with an "earth magnet" can unlock the safe in less than 30 seconds, helps to use the key lock to prevent this from happening. June 24, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Review of Damaged Safe The safe arrived damaged. The backside dented of the safe. The back upper right hand corner dented as well. June 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome safe! I definitely would recommend buying this electronic safe! It can store memory of more than 1 code to unlock, it comes with bolts to bolt to your floor, pretty heavy, I believe it's 100lbs? But anywho, great product, great quality and overall excellent performance! Love it =) March 19, 2014
