Answer:
Hi Preston,
This can be used as an exterior shut off. You will need to connect a Male Hose Thread connector in order to add a garden hose to the valve.

I have a 1/2" copper pipe (which is fairly straight) that goes between the floor and a bathtub faucet. Could this push-to-connect valve be inserted into that 1 foot section? If so, about how many inches would I have to cut out of the pipe, and then would that leave enough pipe for each end of the ball valve to attach to? If this wouild not work, is there another ball valve that I should consider? (Given the space limitations I'd rather not try to solder the joints.) Thanks

Hello Brian, great question. Yes this would work & you would need to remove approximately 2 inches of pipe. If you accidentally remove to much pipe there is another Slip Ball Valve. I will include a link below. It is a bit longer & can make up for any mistakes. The only way I know about this is I DID cut mine to short. I was directed to this Ball Valve to help & it worked great. Answer:
Hi,
Yes, this fitting can be used outside if protected from UV with pipe insulation. Also, as with all other plumbing fittings, SharkBite fittings and PEX must be insulated to protect from freezing temperatures. Thank you for your interest in our products.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 38 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Installation - Smooth Operation Like most of the other Sharkbite solutions, this ball valve is very easy to use and install (and disassemble using a cheap small tool available from Sharkbite). It installed seamlessly and easily into my plumbing system linking my household plumbing to an exterior irrigation system. No soldering required, no need to evacuate water from the pipes, no concern about using a torch near combustibles, and best of all, NO LEAKS. The pipes must be cleanly cut, no jagged edges. I have used this valve for a while now, and it operates as smoothly, and surely as the day it was installed. I like that the valve orientation can actually swivel after installation (it is not fixed as with a soldered valve), so that the orientation of the handle can be adjusted to accommodate obstructions -- quite forgiving if you haven't otherwise paid attention to the orientation of the valve at the time of installation. Yes, these fittings cost a little more than traditional copper fittings and solder, but for the DIY'r the money saved doing the work yourself, easily justifies using these quality, time saving fittings to say nothing of the peace of mind knowing it's water tight. Highly recommend them. April 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Ball Valve to Shut off Section of Water Pipes for Hose For Winter Made sure I asked our fellow Home Depot Advisers before I allowed myself with plumbing stuff. I look at all the different options to splice into the current wet side of the house & run some needed hose outlets. I was able to cut into my current copper line & place a ball valve before installing the rest of the lines for the house hose outlets. Wanted a shut off Valve easy to access & Positive shut off for winter draining for no freeze pipes for the hose outlets after draining. I Used PVC to run in the crawl space for 3 spots. 2 hose hook ups were installed on the front of the house & 1 for the back. Was able to connect with no leaks & was easier than I expected. Think it out & put it on paper... Go Forth With Confidence! November 15, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wish I had invented this product . This is the best plumbing product used in my 75 years of DIY. Makes home repairs a simple job. Clean ends of copper pipe before inserting into fitting. July 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by perfect for adding a valve to an existing pipe the slip version of the valve is designed for adding a valve to an existing pipe. The slip feature allows a small section of pipe to be cut out and then the this product slides onto one side and can then be pulled back to also connect on the other side of the gap. This means you do not have to add a slip pipe in addition to the valve, saving money, time and space. Sharkbite fittings can also be rotated so you should have no problem getting the valve handle in the optimal orientation! Installation could not be easier. Cut the pipe using a proper pipe cutter, but it off with a Sharkbite tool, slid one side of the valve on, use the supplied clip to then pull it back onto the other pipe. Done. Can be used with PVC or copper! No glue, tape or joint compounds needed. Can be resued. December 26, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by just pushes on. Pex products are so easy to use and this is no exception. This is a 4'' in length with a 4'' handle and is a ball type valve. Each end is a 11/2'' x 1/2'' pex, copper or CPVC pipe usable. The valve simply pushes on to cleanly cut pipe for a minimum of tools needed and no glue or clamps required. A truley easy to install and easy to understand piping system. November 12, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worth the extra cost I've learned to keep a couple of these in my plumbing box for the many times that I run into a valve that can't be shut off, needs to be replaced, but the line can't be drained. Soldering in these circumstances is impossible, and the speed of mounting a valve like this can't be beat with a compression fitting. One caution -- debur the copper well, because you can't scratch the o-ring inside. If you do, it won't seal well and you'll have to start all over again. What a solution -- permanent, doesn't cost all that much more than a regular brass valve, and installation is a snap. April 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use and removeable Sometimes a little tricky to remove but overall this is the way to go.... May 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy, Reliable, Fast Repair Part felt of good quality in hand. Slid on the Pex and Copper pipes with ease. The slim design enabled me to connect it to the copper pipe while it was still mounted to the floor joist. Wife was surprised how fast I finished the job! Able to replace an old leaky valve in under 20 minutes from tear down to finish. October 16, 2015
