Answer:
I've always cleaned the end off to reduce the chance of burrs and other garbage getting in the way of a secure fit. Take some wet/dry sand paper about 5" long and a half inch thick (120 grit) and work it back and forth. Go up further than you need to, maybe two inches or so.
Never hurts to have a clean job.

Answer:
No the pipe end does not have to be shiny, just make sure there are no burs on the pipe end. Do yourself a favor and purchase the Pipe Gauge which also removes the burs.

Answer:
Yes it will work. The push to connect end is 1/2" and the threaded top of the water heater is 3/4" MIP. MIP stands for Male Iron Pipe and FIP stands for Female Iron Pipe. Male and Female goes together just as God intended.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 26 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Performed exactly as expected! When I bought my new water heater, I needed new connections. Used these since shark bite has never let me down before. This time they still haven't let me down. Just wish the cost per piece would go down but then again it's better than soldering 5 times and having your wife stress about burning the house down with the torch... So yeah, great value :) September 4, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by sharkbites The sharkbite connectors are pretty awesome for ease of installation. They're great for home plumbing projects. I'm not sure if i would plumb my whole house with them until they can establish some longevity timelines. February 11, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by What a relief! Actually I used 3/4in x 18in S/S push fitting. I have been using "Shark Bites" Connectors for quite awhile in all types of plumbing ie: hot / cold 1/2 to 3/4" pex tubing and copper and I have never had a problem. I recently used the push on connector when I replaced our water heater and it saved me time and worry about leaking. This is a great product. December 10, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by easy fix This item makes instillation very simple. It is a great idea instead of having to get a plumber April 12, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Hot Water Heater supply connectors - Don't Buy! Unfortunately, the chlorine in your water will deteriorate the rubber lining inside the flex hoses after a year or two. Within two years, I had rubber flecks inside a new hot water tank and coming out my bath tub faucet. These cause a problem in plugging up faucet aerators and washing machine supply valves... we had to have a new supply valve installed in our washing machine. I replaced the flex hoses with copper pipe and the problem went away. This has happened to quite a few others...just do an internet search. SharkBite should take this type off the market! Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good product - Incorrectly named I'm sure it works well. People are really happy with it. However, it's 1/2" pipe-side, 3/4" screw-side... I need 1/2" for my Tankless heater. NOWHERE does it say this in any part of the description - yet it does say several times "Connector 1/2". So this is a negative review against HD for not having correct information on the website! Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by SharkBite Flexible Water Heater Connector I have replaced many hot water heaters over the years, but never as easily as the one I replaced using SharkBite flexible water heater connectors. Quick and easy! October 15, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect application Great fit for water heater with copper supply lines that were in a tight location and to dangerous to solder. August 12, 2014
