Some of the SharkBite products include a disconnect "clip", which is a small plastic tool used to disconnect their slip-on valves and connectors to water line. These disconnect "tongs" were apparently designed to make quick work of disconnecting SharkBite connectors. However, I found this tool to be difficult to use, much less effective than the small plastic clips. There were no instructions included on how to use the tongs. I went online to find out if I was using this incorrectly. I was not, but still had trouble with it. Save your money and get the clips instead.

These disconnect tongs are almost essential for any serious work with the Sharkbite fittings. While the little plastic "C" shaped tool works OK to remove a pipe from a Sharkbite fitting the tongs make the disconnect a whole lot easier. With these tongs you can use one hand to release the fitting and the other hand to hold the disconnected pipe. I am working with PEX pipe which is very flexible and being able to hold the released pipe makes a big difference. This tool is a bit pricey but is well made and worth the money.

Sharkbite Disconnect Tongs
This is a very good tool. If you ever have to take apart a Sharkbite connector this tool would be very helpful. If you have room to get both hands into wherever you are working and can pull both directions then the normal little disconnect tool will work fine and is much less expensive but if you have limited room for you hands this tool is very nice. When you have the Sharkbite connector squeezed with this tool it will also be holding the plumbing steady so you can pull the pipe out of the connector. These tools come in different sizes, you need the ½ inch tool for ½ inch connectors and you need the ¾ inch tool for ¾ inch connectors. If you need more than one size it is going to get expensive. The tools are color coded. Very good tool but expensive.
Tools works well
Holds plumbing steady
Works in limited space
Need separate tool for each size

The disconnect tongs, for SharkBite connectors, makes it easier to remove the connectors for reuse or adjustment. When using this tool, you can use one hand, and it leaves the other hand free to hold the pipe, etc.
While this tool costs more than a plastic disconnect clip, it also makes removing connectors easier. If you only ever have to remove 1-3 connectors in your lifetime, then a plastic disconnect clip will be fine. But if you ever think you will need to remove several of these connectors, get the tongs.
Now, removing connectors with either tool is a bit tricky; I suggest you practice a few times on a piece of pipe. Depending on the type of pipe material you are using, disconnecting can be easier or harder. Try twisting the pipe while pulling. This is where the tongs work better; you can squeeze the connector with the tongs in one hand, and twist/pull the pipe in the other hand.
Keep in mind: the tongs only work on one size of connector, so if you work with multiple sizes, you will need the whole set of tools. The tongs are not reversible, so they only fit on the connector one-way. The handle is labeled with the connector size so there's no confusion in the toolbox.

Makes light work of removing quick connect fittings
The tools is supplied without any instructions, which may be confusing for first time users.
The tool itself has two groves cut in to it, the smaller grove goes around the pex pipe, and the larger grove around the brass fitting. When you squeeze the tool it pushes the quick connect release sleeve to enable you to remove the pipe. The video I uploaded shows how easy this is to use.

Don't let the picture fool you, this is a sturdy made tool. I have used the orange plastic releases that Home Depot sells for years, this tool makes it much easier. It does still take that wiggle effect to get the pipe & fitting apart but less pulling. It seems when taking fittings off of installed pipes it is always in a location that is hard to get both of my hands into, let alone the leverage I need to pull at the same time. This tool will allow one hand to compress the lock & pull, while the other hand holds the pipe your taking it off of. These even have a colored rubber coating on the hinge end which is a different color for the different size pipe! Making identification and retrieval from from your tool box easy & quick!
