How do this connectors work?

Meaning the sharkbite type.
Asked by: Rene
Inside the fitting there is a set of teeth that face towards the inside of the fitting. When you insert the pipe into the fitting it slides into two o-rings and the teeth grab the pipe so that it cannot pull out. There is a special tool used to release the teeth so it can be taken off.

Won't the brass threads on this react dielectrically with the galvanized steel tank to corrode in time?

Looks like you are matching up dissimilar metals here if using this on a hot water tank with steel inlet\outlet. - Won't the brass threads on this react dielectrically with the galvanized steel tank to corrode in time? I doubt if a little Teflon tape in between is enough to stop that process.

I have sharkBite connectors on my hot water heater. They were installed approx. 7 years ago. I now have black specs in the hot water. I have replaced the anode rod suggested as a possible problem. I still have the black specs. I have flushed the tank many times which helps for a few weeks. I have seen comments on the internet suggesting that the inner lining on the braided stainless steel water connectors may be causing the problem. Could this be my problem ?
Asked by: RH
While I'm not a plumber, I would bet it is the lining of your braided hose. I had a similar problem twice with braided supply lines on faucets. After I replaced the hose no more black specs.

I bought two of these connectors to hook up my new water heater in February of 2015. I did not have an issue with the product until this last week (July 2017) when we started noticing black flecks in our hot water. I went back to the reviews here on Home Depot and found individuals reporting the same issue so I decided to disconnect the water heater supply lines and investigate. What I found is that the line connected to the hot water side had started to deteriorate. Due to that I removed both lines and replaced with copper instead. I have never had any issues with the other Sharkbite fittings but I would not recommend these for a water heater install.

They slide on really tight and snug. Make sure there aren't any burs on the end of the pipe that you're connecting them to. And remember that once you've made the connection, you can only get it off with the special Sharkbite removal tool (only a couple of bucks to purchase). Wish these came in sizes longer than 24", but I understand that the corrugated steel probably can't hold up pressure-wise if they are too much longer than that.

I have used the threaded versions of the flex connector before, for several water heater installations. The SharkBite version is so much easier to use and so much more quicker to install it is amazing. I used the small tool to release the connection after I had made the initial connection and it simply disconnected no problem. Not a drop of water has appeared yet at this connection. Usually I have minor leaks on the threaded connections no matter how careful I am.

I had purchased extra items that I thought I might need for when the plumber arrived to install our new water heater; he was beginning to explain the process of how he was going to use the old hoses on the new heater when I pulled two new "SharkBite" connectors out of the bag that I had with me. With that he exclaimed "Awesome, you have SharkBites and that is going to make this task so much easier!" Great invention for sure!

After I opened the box I saw that it had a 20 hour cure time. Imagine the hard time I got from my spouse when I told her the water had to stay off for 20 hours. I went back to get faster cure time cement and saw this item. It looked easy enough, when I got home it took all of 10 minutes to install, no leaks back in business. Fantastic!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made installation a snap This is the first time I used a shark bite connector and it made my sisters water heater installation simple. I just cut existing cpvc pipe and pressed new shark bite clamp over cpvc pipe until it stopped and then tightened other threaded end to heater. Made the connections in only minutes. I will always use shake bite clamps in the future.
