Answer:
If you install this model microwave in a cabinet, I def. recommend getting the trim kit from Sharp.
I used the installation trim kit which has a channel vent that directs the heat out over the top and out. The clearence on the top is about 2 1/2 inches, bottom is 1 inch.
This is my 3rd unit, and the same trim kit fit all 3 units. Same screw locations for attaching the trim kit to the microwave. Good

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 73 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Replacement Microwave This was a bit difficult to install in the cabinet, has a metal venting unit that goes behind and around the sides. The front of the microwave had many fine scratches that even though are very annoying are not worth me removing, returning, waiting for a replacement and then reinstalling all over again. We had to replace our original unit because the care givers who assist with the care of my spouse who suffered a massive stroke, displaced the metal tray against the stainless steel insides arching the tube and mother board. We like this microwave and our cabinet was made for this to fit in, so we needed to replace with the same one. June 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sharp/Convection oven Love it! I've had 2 of these. They lasted 15-18 years. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product, highly recommended I've purchased two of these oven, both back in 1998, I bought one for my mother, it still works as good as new, I bought one for myself that same year, Both white model. I still have it however the convection part of it quit working 2 years ago. The spool that turns the fan melted and started to burn through the side, had to buy new part from Ontario, however it turns out the thermostat was not working properly. Too expensive to fix so I use only the microwaving features, and it still works great. Going to purchase a stainless model this year since my new place is all stainless appliances. Both still working great after 16 years. Cat loves to sit on it! September 21, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sharp Convection Microwave I live in a warm climate and am able to use this microwave to prepare many meals without turning on the oven. It is time saving as well with the convection bake feature. May 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Still a great microwave/oven This unit replaced a previous Sharp model that we have had since 1999. The only problem we have is a small ding in the door that is very visible. We hope it lasts as long as it's predecessor. April 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Convection Microwave Great Convection Microwave with many features. I built this into a cabinet in our remodeled kitchen. All appliances are going to an gray color which clashes with our colors. Also this unit has a numeric pad not a dial to turn. All the newer units are going to the dial which is a pain to select everything with. I also thought the dial would be a problem waiting for the right time to fail. My only concern with this convection microwave is that it has a metal, not glass, carousel tray. This may be the reason that you have to elevate popcorn to pop. If you lay the bag on the tray it will not pop. Otherwise we like our purchase. By the way we ordered it online and received it in less than a week! May 6, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Microwave convection oven It came with a small dent at top of the door. It works wonderful! March 29, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by great product which lasted about 8 years. now have 2nd one This Sharp has worked well for me in both usages. It is a great spacesaving additional convection oven. I never really figured out the pre-set programs but did not need it since I don't use the microwve for cooking. After 9 years of working great, the control board gave out and the part was really expensive and difficult to find. I bought a new unit and so far it works great February 11, 2014
