We bought these tiles for two of the bathrooms in our house. We laid them directly on top of the vinyl flooring. Shaw recommends placing the tiles with the lines vertical and the next tile with the lines horizontal. We laid them with the lines all running the same direction. They're easier to vacuum that way. We believe the reason they want them back and forth is because the colors DO NOT MATCH on all the tiles. With them back and forth you won't notice this mismatch as much, but even with it, they do not look very bad. I included a photo so you can see what I mean. They DO STINK though. If you order these and maybe any pre-glued tiles, do yourself a favor and take all of the tiles out of the box and spread them around outside for a couple of hours. Then you'll be good to go. If you lay them directly from the box, the stench is awful. Trying to get the paper off the glue can be a real pain also. Shaw says to peel it off in one quick sweeping motion. That's great advice, if you can get it started. I wish the glue was just a bit tackier. If you need to replace any tiles you shouldn't have a problem because you can just peel the bad tile off the floor and lay a new one. We haven't had a problem yet, but we are a bit concerned with the tackiness holding long term. Maybe we shouldn't be concerned. Only time will tell. Even with the few drawbacks, we would not hesitate to purchase them again.

The carpet squares were easy to install, though the backing that covers the adhesive is somewhat hard to remove (my son had to remove them for me).
The quality is Average, I've had an office chair with wheels on the carpet (with no pad, yeah, I know) and the nap has begun to compress and shed a bit (after 4 weeks of use).
The look of the tiles is a bit indoor/outdoor style, not very much padding. However, It really did fix up our basement office room.
The ease of installation and the price and the quality, though, balance out and I think this is a good carpet tile solution for a secondary-type room.

We installed the tiles in our basement for a playroom. We used two different color tiles to create a checkerboard pattern. It turned out great! The only hard part about the installation was keeping the nap in the same direction. I had to keep checking to make sure the tiles were all lying the same. Other than that, the backing came off with ease and the glue held to the concrete just fine. I would recommend walking all over the tiles once installed to firmly press the glue down.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by DKIdoer $85 solution to $350 problem~!!!
1. These tiles were the LEAST expensive option when a competitor didnt' want to do the smaller job without a HUGE installation fee. And it was FREE SHIPPING!
2. They were VERY easy to install and easy to cut and fit to the odd spots.
3. Even though at first I thought there wouldn't be enough padding or cushion, actually it's not bad even though they are installed on concrete.
4. Hopefully they will stay in place without loss of adhesive for a long time. It's only been a couple of days but I'm still VERY PLEASED!!!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by D3annaV We were very pleased!
We were quite surprised at the quality of this product for the price we paid. Installation was quick and simple. Would have prefered to have directional arrows for the nap but figured out the direction easily enough. Went with the checkerboard effect and it looks great! The only negative was that we were shorted by one tile! Remember to order a little more than you expect to use!

The backing came off with no problems and the tile glue stuck to the concrete. The only hard part of the installation was keeping the nap of the tiles in the same direction, other than that it was a breeze.

I laid this carpet in my daughter's 12x14 room, over a clean and dry floor. The tiles were very easy to cut into the shapes needed to go around the door frames and wood trim. I laid them out in a parquet pattern and it turned out very nice. Two things I noticed, however: the tiles are not all the same color even though they came out of the same box (some were darker than others), and the glue was minimal, even missing on some tiles, so I will have to find something to make them stick tighter to the floor. This lack of glue and color inconstistency was consistent in all of the 11 boxes I purchased. These tiles do not have a chemical odor (no "new carpet" smell) and they feel really nice under foot. I will be purchasing more to carpet my room if Home Depot can get Shaw to increase their color selections (like Navy blue or beige.)

We installed the Berber Berry and Ocean Blue colors in a loose pattern in the basement. They performed as advertised, although there were very slight differences here and there in both tile size and adhesive backing. The Berber Berry tiles seemed just a little thinner than the blue ones. I had trouble with a utility knife, which seemed to dull after the first 6 or 7 tiles; I switched to heavy-duty scissors: What a difference! Once you draw the straight edge on the back of the tile, if you can cut straight at all, I'd recommend highly that you use scissors instead of a utility knife. This small decision made a huge difference. Instead of kneeling over the tile, pushing down on it and slicing, I was able to do most of the work while seated. My back, shoulders and wrists all thanked me the next day.
Note: There is some outgassing, so make sure to ventilate well. I had a bad headache the next day.
