Since engineered floors have a small layer of the hardwood and most of the determining factor is the secondary material it doesn't matter so much. The veneer is the part you care about and the backing can make it rate higher but still easily dent the important part. This floor is very scratch and dent resistant, especially compared to other options available through home depot. Shaw floors as a whole are mostly all constructed the same and will all be pretty high quality in durability, it is simply about picking out the color. Read Less

As for the Home Depot hardness number, this is a number Home Depot assigns based on the Janka rating.

As for the Home Depot hardness number, this is a number Home Depot assigns based on the Janka rating.
The 2039 Janka rating is the rating on the finished flooring with wear layers and other additives and not the raw lumber. The Janka test measures the hardness of wood so that wood species can be compared to one another. The Janka chart is commonly used in the flooring industry to compare hardwood flooring types. Although not exact, the scale is a good reference for which hardwood can better withstand denting and wear when compared with another wood species. The higher the Janka rating, the more dent and wear resistant a particular wood is. If you are gluing the floor is the padding still required? To my understanding when gluing hardwood padding is usually not required.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.5 out of 5 by 2 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Too light compared to photo Ordered 1300 sq ft only to have it. The color is not anywhere as dark as the photos. As to a cappucino or dark brown which one would believe from the photo, it is a medium brown. Decent appearing quality but nothing resembling the photo. May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Looking Floors and Durable First beware the picture makes the floors MUCH darker than they really are. They are more of a mix of a medium chocolate brown with darker grain and a hint of reddish tint. The handscraping is light, the shine is medium to light. The floors are glue or staple only, they have grooves but are NOT click lock even though the search feature on the website will show this as a easy install/click lock. They are very resistant to both scratching and denting. The delivery time is at the long end of the time frame but well worth it. The same brand and product is twice as much as the HD price so excellent value. We have has about 1300-1400 sq ft installed and it takes them about 5-6 business days in total. The trim pieces match nicely. Note there is a little variance in the color between boards within boxes and you may get multiple dye lots. It is not that bad at all just follow the instructions and mix boards from multiple boxes as you go. Make sure your floors are very level and be sure to use the self leveling concrete mix and go the glue route if more than 1/8" to 1/4" difference in floors. We built our house a year ago and still had 3-4 spots that were a bit higher/lower where the previous floor has some semi-obvious sinking or raising which is part of the reason for the new flooring.
