Questions & Answers

Can this product be used with self-adhesive mesh drywall joint tape? If not, any alternative pre-mixed joint compounds that can be used?

Asked by: DIY
I always use tape - never mesh. But I cannot see any reason why this product wouldn't work with mesh. It would take multiple coats, of course.

how much is needed for a 20ftx24ft room

Asked by: ts
That depends on how good you are at installing sheetrock and taping as well as how many corners and openings there are. It is perfectly safe to buy two buckets and return the second one if you don't use it. You will probably use 1 bucket.

Can this product be used on the exterior ceiling of a lanai?

I am covering drywall joints with mesh tape. The drywall is up on a ceiling that covers my lanai, which is adjacent to a swimming pool. The ceiling is not directly exposed to the weather or sunlight. The area is exposed to moisture from humidity and occasionally from mist that blows around during a windy heavy rainfall. The pool area is enclosed with a screen.
Asked by: DIY
It'll be fine, provided you prime and paint it properly. Of course, that's the key to keeping anything finished in a wet area.

I think this product would be fine for 2nd and 3rd coat but 1st coat I would use regular old compound. I think its more prone to cracking if you have to hammer or any minor jarring after compound sets. I put up the fake breadboard and I think driving the nails is what contributed to the joint's cracking. Like I said I would never use this for 1st coat and maybe not 2nd coat. Id say if you want a little easier sanding then fine for 3rd coat. Personally I'll never buy this product. The lightweight compound I've never had a problem Its just this ULTA LIGHTWEIGHT that I've had the problems.

Other than that, I would give a a solid ZERO. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. It doesn't dry, when it dries it smudges as soon as you start applying paint to it. Mixing plaster of paris with it only hardens the plaster, this garbage stays moist. Don't buy it. Don't use it. Just get the regular stuff.

The application product is ok, You have to deal with bubbles but other than that it can be done. On the other hand, you better use the whole bucket otherwise whatever is left will grow Mildew and Mold.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst joint compound in the USG line Worst product in the USG line. I have used just about every type of joint compound over the years (hot mud, cold mud, blue lid, purple lid, green lid…etc..) And each did something well or had a purpose…expect this. I was skeptical of this compound and would never use it for taping (that is what all purpose or durabond is for :-) ) but it was the only thing in stock at the moment and I figured that for a skim coat it would not be that bad….I was horribly wrong. First off I had the problem of air bubbles like another reviewer mentioned…ok so I remixed it to get them out and if that was the worst of it I would have been ok. This mud is prone to cracking in even the thinnest application. I used it for a second coat over paper faced drywall corner bead that was dry for 2 days and it cracked (less then 1/16th thick… I measured with a micrometer..) It cracked just about everywhere I used it too (seems, inside corners as a second coat). The mud was used in a heated house at 68 degrees with about 30% humidity…..(I have a indoor gauge). The mud does not seem to stick nearly as well as even light weight joint compound and it never dries. Since it was cracking I scraped it off the walls and it has been four day and the pile of scrapings are still damp. I am so happy that I did not tape with it and that it only failed as a second coat. I grabbed a bucked of midweight and finished the job with no problems. One of my friends also used this and had the same result…had to redo the seems and the taping…In closing this product does nothing well and is only slightly lighter the lightweight joint compound ….and fails in every way possible…….way to mess this one up USG….

Doing a bathroom remodel, so the drywall part of the effort isn't very big. The time it takes to dry this product is ridiculous. I was planning on putting 3 to 4 lightly applied coats in the course of a day like I used to do. Any coat over a minor application takes a long time. I regret buying this product due to the delays it has added to my project. I love their 'blue' bucket and will use that next time. To be fair in my review. It does mix and apply just fine. Very predictable and even.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not use Do not buy this. Do not use this. This product is extremely light and makes it easy to move the bucket around. This is the only benefit to this. It is harder to work with then all purpose joint compound. It is impossible to get it flat or smooth. It will take you 4 times longer to apply this. Maybe even longer. It dries very slowly. VERY SLOWLY. I had to wait two weeks for some joints to dry so I could sand them. When it dries you will have an extreme amount of cracks and pits. You will need multiple applications for cracks and they still will not be gone unless you use a different compound. I went back to all purpose compound and threw away about half of this bucket after trying it out on a small room.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best product I've ever used!! I've been in the drywall business for 36 years now, full time, and this is hands down the best compound I've ever used. I'm perplexed by all the negative comments I've read. I've experienced exactly NONE of the problems others have written about. I always first coat with a hard setting mud, usually USG 210, and then 2nd and 3rd coat with this Ultra Lightweight and everything is fine, EVERY time. I don't use it straight out of the bucket though. I mix it with some water until it's creamy and smooth. It's MUCH easier to apply in comparison to regular Plus 3, and it lays down much flatter on each subsequent coat. Sanding is simple and much less sanding is required because of how easily this product goes on. It dries equally fast when compared to other USG compounds. I often use fans to increase the drying time of ALL compounds, but I see no difference between the drying time of Plus 3, All Purpose, OR this Ultra Lightweight. I've had NO cracking and NO air bubble problems in the 4 years that I've been regularly using this. I agree that it does tend to mold up in the bucket if left too long, but buy it with the intention of using it rather than saving it and you'll have no problems. This product may not be for the weekend warriors, but it's the best thing I've ever found and I've tried just about everything I've come across over the years. Just use a setting mud for your base coat and never look back !!
