Customer Questions & Answers

Can this product be used with self-adhesive mesh drywall joint tape? If not, any alternative pre-mixed joint compounds that can be used?

Asked by: DIY
I always use tape - never mesh. But I cannot see any reason why this product wouldn't work with mesh. It would take multiple coats, of course.

how much is needed for a 20ftx24ft room

Asked by: ts
That depends on how good you are at installing sheetrock and taping as well as how many corners and openings there are. It is perfectly safe to buy two buckets and return the second one if you don't use it. You will probably use 1 bucket.

Can i use this to skimcoat my old & textured, plaster walls

Asked by: Tray7971
That depends on how deep the texture is. If the texture is more than about 1/8 of an inch deep, I would use a regular weight compound or a dry-bag product specifically designed to coat textured plaster.

Can this product be used on the exterior ceiling of a lanai?

I am covering drywall joints with mesh tape. The drywall is up on a ceiling that covers my lanai, which is adjacent to a swimming pool. The ceiling is not directly exposed to the weather or sunlight. The area is exposed to moisture from humidity and occasionally from mist that blows around during a windy heavy rainfall. The pool area is enclosed with a screen.
Asked by: DIY
It'll be fine, provided you prime and paint it properly. Of course, that's the key to keeping anything finished in a wet area.

Ultra Lightweight 4.5 Gal. Pre-Mixed Joint Compound is rated 2.9 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works for me I have no clue what everyone else's problems are. I've been using this stuff for a long time and it always works perfectly for me. I'm a smaller scale professional and I use it mostly for skimming and patching. I can put on very thin and accurate coats to the point where I barely have to sand. Maybe I just haven't used their other products enough to compare them but this works great for me. I also have never had any cracking but I never put it on very thick.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stays Soft Maybe its designed not to dry as hard as the other versions for dust control, but this stuff diesnt really dry. Sanding off leaves scratch marks. I ended up putting an extra polish coat on using the blue lightweight compound. That seemed to fix the issue. Will avoid this version fron now on.

Doing a bathroom remodel, so the drywall part of the effort isn't very big. The time it takes to dry this product is ridiculous. I was planning on putting 3 to 4 lightly applied coats in the course of a day like I used to do. Any coat over a minor application takes a long time. I regret buying this product due to the delays it has added to my project. I love their 'blue' bucket and will use that next time. To be fair in my review. It does mix and apply just fine. Very predictable and even.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from awful. waste of time and money. I have been using this on a room I am renovating and I absolutely can not get the tape to keep from separating from the wall with this compound. I have tried multiple times even scraping all the compound off a joint and doing it all over only to get the same results. very frustrated and unhappy with this product. I have wasted almost a whole week trying to make this work and now have to scrape it all off and start over with a better product.

Excellent to use and I would highly suggest it for many uses in the home...I designed my own "knock down" using this Ultra Lightweight joint compound by USG.....the cure rate is faster than any I have used and sands easily if needed before sealing. I was able to do my entire interior walls in my home without any problems. Even the contractor was impressed! :)

It has a very different texture than "typical" drywall compound. The feel is dry. In fact, I typically have a spray bottle to "spritz" it with, to make the knife slide more smoothly. What I like most is the ease of sanding, and the finished product. It's definitely not for everyone, but I like it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not impressed What I don't like about this product is that there was more mud on the floor than on the wall. Didn't adhere to the paper faced drywall while taping, took forever to tape a seam. Just not good. I'm not a pro, but I prefer old school mud.

I've used about 8 buckets of this stuff in heated, low humidity homes (65 degrees) in the winter and here is the good and the bad. The good: It is lightweight. It cleans up well. It goes on smoothly and dries quickly IN VERY SMALL SKIM coats. Knocks down easily. Sands OK. OK for thin-coat build-up around tape on butt joints. The bad: It does not adhere well. I have had sections where mud peeled away from the wall under tape and sections where tape peeled away from the mud (with adequate, well mixed mud under the tape.) Both cases required a full day to re-work and dry again. Have tried wetting tape and/or spritzing wall with no positive result. Also, for anything 1/8 of an inch or more (i.e. typical taper joint, open wall ends between corner bead or any gap fill), it does not dry fully in 24 hours...more like 48+. The surface will be dry, but if applying another coat, the still-wet mud underneath will buckle and peel. Because of those issues, I would not recommend this product. Too bad it took me several buckets to figure out it was the mud. Went back to blue stuff.
