Customer Questions & Answers

Can it be used to paint walls and get a smooth finish?

Asked by: Josy
Hello Josy, our interior paint pads are designed to achieve a smooth finish when painting walls and other surfaces with latex paint. However, the tear resistant deck pad mentioned in your question is designed for painting and staining on outdoor surfaces and is not intended for smooth finish applications indoors.

It is eminently tear resistant. I used this device to apply wood protector on my decades-old deck, using a suitable extension pole, and the job was completed with relative ease. The deck has plenty of slightly-protruding nails and some jagged places but the stain pad never tore. The pad was still viable after I spread a gallon of timber oil covering about 225 sq. ft., so I called it quits and ditched the pad as spent. I'll finish the job with a replacement pad. I never got a speck of stain on my person or where it didn't belong. Tipping the applicator is a necessary technique to reach gouged areas, irregularities and edges.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Make staining my deck a breeze Last time we crawled around on the deck using a brush; that killed me. This time we used the Shur-Line Deck Pad on the end of a pole. We were done in 2 hours. I'm very pleased with the quality of the application. No, it doesn't get all down in the cracks but man is it easier. The pad was good for about 100 to 150 square feet before it wore out. I had a replacement, should have bought 2.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from painting pads This pad is thicker than one used for inside painting. It holds a lot of stain and between staining was kept in a gallon bag and did not dry out. This saved a lot of time with clean up from day to day. It holds enough stain to cover under the soffits and saturate the really dry cedar siding on my house. The siding now beads water where it seems to have been absorbing water before. The pad attaches to a long pole for easier reaching of soffits and high siding. The pads clean up well with soap and water. The only down side is that they will slip off the handle portion when dragging across the siding. This was a matter of technique to stop this from happening

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this pad! I had a new stoop built for my home. I bought this pad to apply a transparent stain on my stoop. I was thrilled with the results. The stain was evenly applied on the steps and the slats. Well worth the price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed in all ways I bought this to stain my deck, it was recommended over a roller. What a mistake. The pad is not secured firmly so it falls off constantly. The pivoting handle is actually a major hindrance, not a help. There's a button if you want to eliminate the pivoting motion, but it doesn't work well and it won't stay in place anyway. The backing of the pad soaks up a ton of extra paint/stain so it you use this on spots above your head it drips all over the place, what a mess. I ended up switching to a roller and backbrushing it with a paint brush. They need to go back to the drawing board on this one. Keep it simple, make the unit rigid and secure the pad better and you might have a decent product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pad ripped and shred, handle fell apart Today I bought the 7" version of this painter pad on the suggestion of the Home Depot Paint Section Clerk. I'm glad they gave me a refund after the handle broke apart and both pads shredded before I could finish applying clear seal on my deck. Horrible product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from poor design-too fragile for intended use I was trying to put a coat of polyurethane on my porch deck. The pad came off the holder with the entire spring attachment breaking apart after applying approx. 2 sq. ft of surface area. Had to discard item and finish with paint roller.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lousy application Perhaps these pads work for paint or perhaps they are only for very smooth surfaces, but they were useless for applying stain on fencing. It constantly was getting caught on the fencing. A small 6-inch roller was much better.
