Hello Mara, this gate has 2inch by 2inch sides that are notched for the top, mid and bottom braces to fit into and held with screws. It works great for a lightweight gate that you can choose your hinges, latch and stain to customize your look. Click on the photo to see it used as a gate.

Hello Mara,
The appearance on both sides is the same, except on one side you will see the fasteners. As far as if you can use this as a gate that will depend on the hardware you would be using. It may be necessary to re-enforce the areas where you install the hardware. This company also has a line of gates, see the following link.

We have a solid pressure-treated 6 foot privacy fence, but our neighbors can still see us out by the pool from their above-ground deck. We can't plant trees because of the roots/leaves near the pool and the fence toppers sold are only 2 feet tall. Thanks for your help!

I guess my advice would be first that you would have to see if your local codes or perhaps community CC&R's would allow for it. Then assuming the codes didn't matter and there were no CC&R's my next concern would be that of Safety and Wind Loading. The higher you make your fence the more wind load there is on the posts. I have no way to advise you as to that aspect, but as much as I would love for you to use our product I don't want to suggest you proceed without further research. Yes, cosmetically I guess you could use them in that fashion, but be careful not to overload your posts. Thank you for your interest. Read Less

How do I attach them to the posts?
How deep do the posts need to be in the ground (i.e. how long a post do I need)?

Some users have installed screws at a sharp angle through the vertical side rail and into a post such as a 4x4, but in that case it is recommended you pre drill and pre counter sink drill for the screw head. Or, there are a number of galvanized or powder coated angle brackets you can procure to screw it to a post as well. WIth regards to depth, there are too many aspects to consider including your local frost lines to advise you definitively, however generally 24" deep is adequate in most areas of the country. Since these have a reduced wind load due to height and more frequent post spacing, you could likely get away with substantially less depth, but keep in mind your frost line depth. Read Less

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works as our garden gate! Nice! We used this fence panel as a garden gate and works well. This product arrived in good shape and shipped to us in the time we expected. It seems well made and hope to have years of use. Nice product! April 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Used this as a gate Makes a perfect gate. I like the color and design. It adds style to my very standard fence. May 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by GREAT PRODUCT BOTH GATES ARE EXCELLENT QUALITY AND BEAUTIFUL. AND THEY LOOK GREAT May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Cedar arch utility panel/gate. Great deal on this lightweight but solid 30 inch wide cedar panel that turns into a great gate with hardware and stain from Home Depot. August 27, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Love it!! We used this fence panel as a gate for our raised, enclosed garden. It works great and looks so very nice! April 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sharp looking panels, excellent price! I have wanted to add privacy panels to the underside of my deck for years. I decided to install these. I'm waiting for the treated posts and stringers to dry out (treated lumber), but when they do, I'll stain it all to match my deck above. They are lightweight, and seem delicate. Cedar is naturally lightweight, so I don't find this particularly off-putting. I think they're built solidly enough, and I hope that they will last longer than my will to replace them! They are not perfectly identical, but identical enough in overall shape/design. They're real wood... no two will be perfectly alike. You can't build these for $50 each - great value! I'd buy again. Really happy with these - and I love that they were delivered to my home for free. July 18, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product Well constructed and creative design. I often buy products and think, I could have built/designed this better, but not w/ these panels. I keep thinking, how in the world can they sell this at this price. April 24, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice looking panels Panels look nice and are reasonably-well assembled. Some of the wood slats are quite rough while others are smooth. We bought the panels to put around a central ac unit. We haven't had a chance to install them yet, but they will work nicely and compliment the backyard. October 13, 2015
