Octant Kit Base Gravel & Leveling Sand

Your directions only say the base should be: "Base should be constructed of compacted gravel."

What kinds of gravel? I hear that pea gravel won't work because it won't compact. What kind will?

Also, should leveling sand be used on top of the gravel? Is so, how much?

The directions don't mention needing a layer of leveling sand. Is that recommended in addition to the 6" gravel base?

Answer:
Hello NewbieDIY,
Yes you should use an inch of leveling sand on top the gravel base .
This will provide a even and level support under your paved surface.
Thanks for your inquiry.

If we buy this, it would be in a center section of a walkway. We would have a sidewalk connecting on the north and south end of it on the flat side. We need to know the length of the flat side in order to know if it with link up to it. We are wanting our walkway to be 4ft wide.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 7 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for what I needed I used this patio kit to go around a telescope pier that I built. Thus I didn't use the center stone. I like the way the final project looks and I now have a cool place to stand when I use my telescope. It is only about 50 square feet so if you are going to use it as a place for 4 to sit around a small table it will be just big enough. There is an expansion kit which doubles the area which is one reason I went with this plan, just in case I want to build larger when I get the money. The price is probably about right though it seems expensive to me being concrete. I wish it was a little bit cheaper but I am still happy with the results. October 28, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by like neutral color and thickness of product Beautiful on patio and just what I was looking for November 8, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great addition to backyard patio space The WESTERN BUFF SLATE OCTANT KIT is an eye-catching focal point in my backyard landscape. I used it as a landing area at the bottom of the stairs to my deck; the color and texture fit perfectly with my rosewood-colored deck stain, brown rubber mulch and rose-color stone landscaping. Installation was a simple process after the site was prepared with a 4-6 inch stone base, along with two inches of sand. Once leveled, and the individual patio stones were sealed, placement was fairly easy. The stones are of high quality and nearly two inches thick, so be prepared for some heavy lifting. When installing, leave about 1/4 inch of space between the stones to provide enough room to make adjustments as the last ones are put into place. Check your positioning as you move around the design to ensure the central stone is in alignment with those around it. Polymer sand as grout will lock the stones into the final pattern. I encountered one flaw in one stone; sort of a popped "bubble" that left a small circular void in the surface. I used a little extra polymer sand to fill and smooth the surface, and am satisfied with the final result. Overall, the look is very good, and the price is reasonable for what you get. June 30, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by As advertised - Great product This 7.5' octagonal patio kit is a great value for the money. It was easy to install, and it looks great. Wish I had space for the extension, it would be a nice contrast. July 7, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Incredible value and style for the price The kit directions were simple to use. Stones were heavy to lift but once they were placed and leveled the patio has been a delight. Everyone who sees the patio comments on how elegant it looks. June 10, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by octagon Kit The product is excellent, however the price is high, approx $100 too high. Easy to install, use the polymeric sand to seal it off. June 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice addition to metal gazebo We had it delivered site-to-store to save on delivery costs. The nice folks at Home Depot loaded the stones into the back of our vehicle and then we were able to unload them one by one once we got home. They are paler in color than I thought but still pretty and natural looking. It took no time at all to put them together to make the design. They are thick and sturdy. We now have a special floor for our scroll metal gazebo in the woods. June 11, 2013
