Product Overview

Designed to replace nails in certain connectors, the load-rated Strong-Drive SD screw has been tested and approved for use in many popular Simpson Strong-Tie products. The SD structural-connector screw features an optimized shank which is specifically designed to be compatible with the fastener holes in Simpson Strong-Tie connectors. The hex head virtually eliminates cam-out and helps avoid stripping of the head during installation. The sharp point of the screw enables fast starts, and the patented serrated threads reduce torque for improved drivability.

  • Tested and approved for use in many of our best-selling connectors for both interior and exterior applications
  • Single-fastener steel-side-plate load capacity of the SD10 exceeds that of the 16d common nail
  • Ideal for use in tight spaces where using a hammer is difficult and more control is desired
  • #10 x 1-1/2 in. structural Screw
  • Includes 100 screws
  • Optimized heat-treating for ductility and strength

Can I GET THESE IN STAINLESS STEEL? AND WHAT iS THE PRICE?

Asked by: MOON
The Simpson website indicates that this screw is made of mechanically galvanized (ASTM Class 55) heat-treated carbon steel. It is made for both interior and exterior use, and can even be used with some pressure-treated woods (they recommend you use their "Series 300" for certain critical pressure-treated applications). These screws will be fine for most typical home applications. Check the Simpson website for its application guide, which, though not meant for the layman, is a good start.

Are these screws compatable with pressure treated lumber?

Pressure treated lumber has acids that can eat at most screws and cause them to fail. Are these screws compatable with pressure treated lumber?
Asked by: DO
Ideally, galvanized steel or ceramic coated steel are best with pressure-treated wood. Since this product is made for both interior and exterior structural Having said that, the vast majority of home applications will not require any special protection, unless unprotected surfaces are exposed to acids, salts, etc, as may be found in a chicken coop, stock feed barn, garage with lots of chemicals, etc. The Simpson website indicates that nearly all its products, including this one, are "mechanically galvanized," and suitable for most applications, though they have a caveat that some pressure-treated applications might want to use their "Series 300" hardware. Personally, I am not overly concerned with my pressure-treated column post and this product. If you believe it to be an issue, then just change screws every 2-10 years, though you will run the risk of stripping the wood to the point that it can no longer take this size screw.

These are the recommended screws for use with the "Simpson Strong-TieABA 6x6 ZMAX Galvanized Adjustable Post Base," which is meant to support a column post for a porch overhang or gazebo, etc. The screws are surprisingly strong, and can take a lot of torque without breaking, warping, or stripping. The package comes with a bit which may be used in a socket wrench or drill. It holds well to wood and concrete (the latter with an appropriate expanding anchor). I have also found it useful in a number of other projects, including non-structural wood, metal, and plastic. This should be in every tool kit!
