re: pf26 framing hanger

What is the best joist hanger to use for 2x6 attaching to ledger? Is the pf26 a better hanger in that it actually hangs off the top of the ledger with the 90 degree angle on top? Thnx ur reply... !
Asked by: Anonymous
Chris - The PF26 hanger may be a good option, but it requires 10d common nails which are 3" long so it will depend on the ledger size. If you are using a 2x ledger, the LUS26 may be a better option using 10dx1 1/2" nails to the ledger and 10d common nails for the double shear joist nailing (do NOT use short nails here). If higher capacity is needed, the HUS26 uses the same fasteners, but is a heavier duty hanger.

So who was correct in the three reviews?

If the last guy was correct, why doesn't the picture reflect this? Thanks.
Asked by: cruiser
The third review is correct (though it is minimal and would be unnoticeable in the illustration). The hanger height is 5.3125" from the top of the seat to the underside of the top flange with a tolerance of +0 and -1/16”, the top flange is 18 gauge so approximately 3/64" thick (0.046875"). The National Design Specification (NDS) lists a 2x6 as measuring 1.5” x 5.5” when dry. Based on these dimensions, the 2x6 would protrude 0.078125” to 0.140625” above the top flange (taking into account the hanger height tolerance). Note: Wood shrinks and expands as it loses and gains moisture, particularly perpendicular to its grain. (This may or may not be the issue in the first two reviews.) Simpson Strong-Tie manufactures products to fit common dry lumber dimensions. Thank you!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't fit 2x6!! Got this product thinking I wouldn't have to be too precise when laying in the frame for my deck. But the 2x6's stuck above the bracket by a good 1/4". I had to bend the ears flat, secure the 2x6 at the proper level then bend the ears around the frame. The extra price was to make the job easier and it ended up being harder.

I bought these to help secure the rafters to the header on an outbuilding I am currently building. Secured with 2 inch star head screws & they provided the necessary sturdiness for a good roof deck.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't fit Thought It would be easier but as I'm having the same problem as the review before. The 2x6's dont fit flush with the frame when using these

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works perfectly as designed The previous 2 reviewers don't recognize that the joist is supposed to extend to just above the top flanges so that they don't get in the way of the subfloor. The hangers work perfectly as designed. Simpson hangers are the standard of the industry.
