Many straps are designed to be used back-to-back on a piece of lumber without fastener interference.

The TP tie plate is not a load rated product: http://www.strongtie.com/products/connectors/tp-tpa.asp.
The holes are sized for 8d common nails, 8d x 1 1/2" nails, or the SD#9x1 1/2" structural connector screw (http://www.strongtie.com/products/connectors/screws-loadrated.asp).
