Answer:
Literally, not very far, but they do expand a little bit. The result is a lip of about 1/32" around the 4 x 4 as a drip stop.

Answer:
White Rust-Oleum that bonds to plastic will do it very well. I've also sprayed 1-2-3 primer on them and gotten a few years from that.

Answer:
No, but one of the spray paints that bonds to plastic will do a stellar job with these. Just make sure you clean the caps first to get maximum paint adhesion.

Answer:
Yes - water, like electricity - will always find the path of least resistance. In this case, it'll drip through to the 4 x 4. If you're not using the hole to attach the cap to the 4 x 4, it can be sealed with clear drying silicon.

Answer:
Yes, water will "always" find a way. I'm using clear silicon sealer "over" the nail and cap area to reduce seepage over time, and smoothing it down.

PT,
An 8d or 10d common nails is to be inserted through that hole. The cap is not intended to form a water-tight seal on the sides of the post; it is figured any water that gets in will simply seap out.
Thank you!

Do these caps fit a standard treated 4x4 post? No PVC, just a standard post

Most of the caps that say 4x4 are too big because they are made for use with a vinyl fence post. Not what I want, just a standard treated 4x4.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Does the job Installed these because the squirrels were always chewing up the metal ones. Less than half of the price of the metal ones. They fit tight, look fine, do the job and the squirrels have no interest. Win win June 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by cover me Fit 4 x 4 post on my wooden fence perfectly and were easy to install. Will prevent water damage to open end of post at a very reasonable cost. May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Classy Finishing Look This cap is a great, inexpensive, way to finish off the top of those vertical 4x4's. After reading another customer comment about water pooling near the nail in the top (thanks for that comment), I applied some Silicone RTV and smoothed it out. It dries clear. These would be fantastic for a fence to keep the water damage of the top to a minimum. Highly recommended. April 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Works great Installed a fence last year, wanted some caps for the posts but didn't want to spend a lot and didn't want white ones. I found these on the website and ordered them to the store, they came in within a week. These pretty much just sit on top of the post with a very small overlap on the edges of the top, and secure with one nail in the middle. They seem to do the job, I've seen water puddled around the nail on top so the nail must seal to the plastic decently well, and they give your fence a finished look as well. March 30, 2016
