Customer Questions & Answers

Will 1 1/2" nails compromise the structural integrity?

My deck has a 2x12" ledger board bolted directly to the poured concrete foundation, with joists spaced 16" on center. How will using Simpson 10d 1 1/2" nails, instead of 3 or 3 1/2" lengths, affect the structural integrity in securing the joists to the ledger?
Asked by: ProDIY
The 3" -3 1/2" box or common nail is not a structural nail. The 1 1/2" joist hanger nail is a structural nail that is designed to carry the load of the joist hanger. Nail length does not give the fastener strength. The structural nail and it's diameter is what gives it strength. General contractor for 25+ years Carpenter for 40+ years.

Can I use SD10 instead of SD9

Can I use the SD10 2 1/2" fastener instead of the SD9 2 1/2" fastener? Home depot does not sell the SD9 2 1/2" fastener.
Asked by: brad
I bought SD10 2 1/2" fasteners and they do not fit this joist hanger. Their diameter is larger than the double shear angled openings. Home Depot should carry the SD9 2 1/2 " fasteners that required.

Will they work on 2x12 treated

Asked by: Toad
Based on size, the LUS210Z can be used with a 2x12 member, but it would be up to the Designer/Engineer of Record to evaluate if it is an appropriate hanger for the specific application based on framing layout, demand loads, local building codes, etc. Also, the LUS210Z has the Z-MAX coating which provides a medium level of corrosion protection. Please see the corrosion section of our website to determine the recommended finish for your specific condition (i.e. environment, type of treated wood used, amount of chemical present, etc.). Thank you!

Do Simpson Strong Tie LUS210Z joist hangers work for 2x12?

I have 2 x 12 joists and would like to add the extra support, does it work?
Asked by: David
David, Provided the capacity is adequate for your demand load, the LUS210Z can be used with a 2x12 joist. Our recommendation is the hanger height be at least 60% of the joist height for stability. Please see the "2x12" section at one of the following links (based on header material) for the allowable loads: Douglas Fir or Southern Pine - Spruce-Pine-Fir or Hem Fir - Thank you!
