Retrofit installation is planned in a wood subfloor covered by plush-carpet with 1/2" quality padding.
Will this box work for the carpet application, or is it suitable only for bare floors?

Specifically, will the ring and cover adequately secure the carpet?

I installed mine in a retrofit with very nice quality carpet, including heavy duty padding. The height of the box is adjustable, so you can raise/lower as needed to fit properly in the subfloor. If you stick to the template, there's plenty of room around the cover to secure the carpet. If you're really worried, you could always secure the carpet and padding with a bit of carpet tape when you cut the hole Read More

Hi Floored,
The key is not really going over carpet, but also not cutting the carpet around the floor plate either.
I'd recommend you to cut just slightly (1/4") smaller than the plate itself so that the carpet rests cleanly over it.
This also allows the junction box hole itself to fit safely over it.
Same applies to the padding. Once the plate is installed properly, you'll have a professionally Read More

The black parts of the outlet cover are rubber inserts that can be removed to allow wire to pass through a closed cover.

Answer:
Mine are very tight fitting, and the light use of a flat screwdriver to pry up the cover was needed. It's designed tight to keep it from opening easily, as ideally once the plugs are installed in the recessed box, you shouldn't need to get into it very frequently.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks good! Floor outlet, Nice product, haven't installed it yet. January 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product, Difficult Installation I’m using this in the middle of our kitchen by our prep table, so aesthetics is important. I really like that the plug concealed when in the floor box. That’s the main reason I choose this versus some other Raco or Allied Moulded floor box. The installation is a bit of pain, since the tolerance is a bit tight (~ 1/8”) between when the cutout being too small for the floor box, and too big for hang tab. Instead of using one big hole saw to cut the hole to size. I had to cut four corner holes and jig saw the straight sides. Fortunately, installation after the cut out phase is a cinch. It looks great. I’m giving it 3 stars for the difficult installation. April 6, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice design and relatively easy to install I installed these in my living room floor, while I was finishing the basement. I wanted to have a way to get power outlets into my great room with minimal effort, and these provided the appearance and functionality that I was looking for. They installed easily after cutting the existing carpet and subfloor. The cover is very sturdy and almost difficult to open, so it's not something you'll get into on a regular basis. There's plenty of room in the recessed box for reasonable sized cords, without them sticking out of the box. January 20, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by High quality but cannot get the lid to work easily. The outlet box and cover are very robust. The quality is great. I would have given this 5 stars, but the retainer spring and the two rounded rods that act to keep the lid closed cannot be opened with a screw driver as intended. One can push the cover open from the bottom when the cover is not attached to the floor, but neither of the two boxes that I purchased and installed open as intended. I pried so hard on one in an attempt to open that a piece of plating on the tongue warped and came off. April 3, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product & Smart Buy! This item is a made of quality and has a smart design allowing you to have something plugged in and the plug lid closed, It will be placed under my sofa in the middle of the great room allowing my family and friends to have power without running cords across the room. Very smart item to have. December 15, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product work exactly as advertised. We installed these boxes in several different wooden floor finishes and the installations were simple. The finished product provides an excellent appearance for the upscale residential application. March 20, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good deal for the Money I researched similar items at our local electrical supply house - the cost of this was 1/4 of the cost at the supply house - may have been a "better" unit, don't think so - this is sturdy, seems durable, looks great, and I saved over $120 with this plug. - don't think the other one was that much better. I am not a certified electrical expert, have experience with this type of work for the last 20+ years. August 7, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Item at great price floor box works great. able to keep cover closed while in-use, easy to install and durable. nice feature is that the cover screws directly to subfloor instead of outlet box which allows for a great fit to floor. July 31, 2012
