The chrome cap is designed so it snaps over the "spider" hub and is not designed to be removed once it is snapped in place.....I broke mine getting it off after my wife clogged up the overflow because she washes her hair leaning over the tub and her loose hair clogged the overflow pipe causing the tub to overflow....flooding the bathroom floor which came thru the ceiling downstairs...There is a long stainless screw....or a set screw which goes thru the hub on the spider to tighten against the flat side of a 10 mm shaft....using a crayon...or a china marker ( wax pencil ) turn the knob so the drain is open....make a mark at the bottom of the chrome cap about where the number 7 would be on a clock....now turn the knob to where the drain is closed...the mark should be where the 5 is on a clock...That should be where the end of the set screw is located...need to drill a 1/4 th inch diameter hole into the edge or side of the knob so a phillips screwdriver can reach thru the hole and fit into the top of a stainless screw....when that screw is backed out about one turn...you should be able to pull the knob and spider off the end of the shaft... Some set screws require an Allen wrench instead of a screwdriver...this "spider" thing is shaped like the spokes in a wagon wheel and has 6 spokes.....the screw is located midway between two of the spokes... Don't know why manufacturing engineer designed it this way.....should have known it would have to be removed to clean... Read Less

Answer:
Hi,
There is a tiny set screw that holds the knob to the stem. Look around the circumference of the knob and there should be a small hole. You can use a small screwdriver and loosen the set screw. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Customer Reviews

Rated 2.3 out of 5 by 16 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not a good quality product We did not even completely install this cable drain. The quality of the PVC and the finish pieces that look like they are brushed nickel but just plastic did not impress us. The plug for the drain already had a dent in it because it was not really metal. Wish we had not bothered to cut it to fit because now we cannot return it. Please do not waste your money on this accessory for the tub like we did. Very disappointed... February 15, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by not worth the price For $80, I would expect a lot more brass!! I had to buy because was only tub drain in brushed nickle. Pop up drain control is also flimsy plastic. Not impressed at all with this product. March 8, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't buy it! Just bought this and had it installed by a professional, but after the bathroom is done and I go use it on DAY 1, it doesn't hold water. The "plug" is not connected to anything but appears to be pushed up and it must "fall" when it goes down because it is not attached to any other part of the drain! It will not hold water! Cost nearly one HUNDRED dollars wit the tax and it is good for nothing. Can't tear up the tub, tile etc so I am stuck with a totally new bathroom with a drain that won't work. Did my installer do something wrong? Is there a fix? November 21, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Drain I have enjoyed the cable drain for reliable service. This is the second house that I have installed these drain in and would recommend them for reliable service. October 23, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Very disappointed, does not fit standard tub This item would not fit my standard 5' by 30" (Americal Standard Cast Iron) tub. The drain portion is constructed differently than conventional units, and has few threads -- did not have enough to catch a thread with the rubber gasket in place. In my opinion, it will probably only work on fiberglass tubs -- I think some of the resin products probably are too thick for this thing also. In additon, the quality is no more than average, probably less than many others. Considering that it is, in my opinion, very expensive, I feel that its value is poor. I'm returning it to H-D and I hope I can get my money back. In addition, the instructions are minimal and poor. April 7, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not good Instructions I still have no idea how this thing is supposed to go together after two hours of messing with it. The instructions are garbage they show all the parts but not where the tub goes in between the parts...DUUUHHH. The picture on the box shows the big seal on the bottom and the instructions show it on the top, I tried all combinations and it looks funny with my final version. This was a replacement from another Watts peice of junk from HD that didnt shut off the water entirely. Unbelievable that HD sells this, thank god it was half price but still too much as the amount of time you will spend is ridiculous January 27, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by This Drain Kit is JUNK!!!! I spent a little more and got this cable driven shower drain because I thought that the higher price meant a better product. What a mistake! I had remodeled with new tub/shower and installed this drain. Less than 2 years later, the cable drive housing leaks badly. It ruined kitchen ceiling below. You will notice small box at drain bottom where cable enters drain. This box leaks along with location where cable enters box. Stick with trip lever models in brass for years of reliability. I will never make a mistake like this again. Keep the design simple with quality material, especially where the construction is buried within floors or walls, it will save you in the long run. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Pricey, but Great Drain I needed a drain system that fit a taller tub and this was the only one in stock. I have now installed 2 of these and I like the cable system. The drain lifts out for my tenants to be able to easily clean. March 24, 2015
