Customer Questions & Answers

How do I change the blade on this skilsaw 5587

Asked by: linden
use wrench provided, or other wrench that fits onto bolt. Naturally, do this with saw unplugged/unpowered. You need to find a way to manually hold the blade. Recommended method is jamming blade into a piece of soft scrap wood. Don't over tighten on re-install, snug should be fine.

can the skilsaw 5587 be rebuilt?

Asked by: knay112
rebuilt? How so? Electric Motor changing armature/brushes? No, I'd not recommend that, but if you manage to wear this one out I'm sure Skil has a parts list. I wouldn't expect the parts to be around in 10+ years.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Home Saw This isn't a professional saw, but it should perform just fine for any homeowner. I might upgrade to a saw that has a spindle lock for faster blade changes; however, I'll see how long this one lasts. I've been cutting 3/4" oak plywood for home projects with a plywood blade. No complaints, and the saw is handling it ok, but I'm not setting records or trying to finish the job in 3 minutes either. Overall, this should suffice for any home owner, but if your expecting to change blades often for either a big project, or serious use I'd look at an upgraded model.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This Saw helps DIY'ers create amazing projects! We have been in need of a circular saw for a long time. It was always our plan to ditch the MDF furniture in our home and spend our weekends building our own! The Skil brand circular saw was a major player in making those dreams come true. The first project we did with it was turn a pile of barn wood into the perfect coffee table. We took three pieces of odd shaped reclaimed barn wood and glued them together. After that, we made a jig to hold the newly made rectangle of wood so that we could cut the 4 sides down to the perfect square sized table. This saw cut through this wood with perfect precision. There were no issue. The blade was fast and did not slip or skip. This was the first time that we used a circular saw and we were able to get the job done right, the first time. The saw is ergonomic, sturdy, fast, and powerful! Please see the picture I posted of the finished coffee table. Thanks to Skil, we got it done!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from No spindle lock - very awkward installing blade This model is differentiated from a slightly different Skil model by not having a lock button for holding the spindle while installing the blade. The manual advises "(5587: To lock shaft hold the saw securely by the upper guard with blade teeth imbedded in scrap wood)" while tightening the blade stud. Very awkward. Save yourself the frustration. I am returning it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent addition to my set of tools! This tool was instrumental in helping me complete a small wood project. It has some great power for the small jobs I have used it on and has been very reliable! It is of a great design and good build quality from a brand I have really start to like purchasing from. I would definitely recommend it to my friends and they do not mind bugging me to ask to use it for their own projects!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Saw! For a first timer, this is a great saw. It has a nice worm drive style handle with a soft grip for a comfortable feel and good control when doing a project. The saw depth is average , however I did not see a locking bottom for the blade. The saw has good solid weight and size and seems very durable .

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Saw This saw is pretty bad. The blade tends to slip a lot with the slightest bit of resistance. It doesn't have much torque to work with either. The blade guide doesn't move out of the way easily & the handle to adjust the table depth gets in the way of the guage to measure it. Don't waste your money on this saw
