Cannot seem to find a replacement "4 in. x 36 in. abrasive belt" for this tool. Can't believe this is a "throw-away" tool as soon as the provided belt is worn out.

Available on many sites on the internet and I have bought various grits. Actually, I found the 6" adhesive backed sanding disc harder to find.

We do not make a 4x36 sanding belt at this time. Diablo makes a 4x36 sanding belt and is also available from Home Depot: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Diablo-4-in-x-36-in-80-Grit-Sanding-Belt-DCB436080S01G/202830848?keyword=4x36+sanding+belt

Answer:
Howdy Paul,
Yes you can use this sander to work on just about any material. The stronger the sander the more torque you will have. The other variable is the type of sandpaper you will need aluminum oxide sandpaper or silicon carbide sandpaper.
The grit will depend on how fine you want the finish.
Happy grinding,
Coach Dave

4 Amp 4 in. x 36 in. Corded Electric Belt/Disc Sander is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 30.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Quality and Value. Just added this to my collection of Skil tools. Only thing I changed was the sanding grit to 120. It comes with 80 grit and it was a little aggressive for me, even on hardwoods. This little sander gets the job done and once again Skil delivers a great product at a reasonable price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from durability I bought this sander less than 6 weeks ago, I have made sure it was clean and properly maintained the entire time. Last night it stopped working. I will be returning it and will never get another one. If you actually like to do woodwork, don't buy this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great bench tool for everyone! I replaced my old craftsman sander with this new Skil and I love it. The allen wrench tools are securely attached and come in handy for quick adjustments. No wood worker should be without one of these.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great mix of power and portability Easy to setup to get started. Took me half an hour to read the manual and go through each step before I was sanding. Swapping the belt is a snap, about 5 seconds literally. Not sure if you can swap the disc as it is glued on with adhesive. A removable disc plate would be a good idea so you can use different grades of paper without having to toss the paper disc. You can swap the belt and put it in the vertical position to a similar effect. Switching to vertical position also takes about 10 seconds including repositioning the table. Although it takes another 30 seconds to reposition the unit if you bolt it down as required in the instructions. (after you predrill the holes). I think the next project will be a lockable turntable to swap often and quickly. Adjusting the tracker on the belt took some getting used to. There is a delay so use the suggestions in the manual and switch the motor on and off quickly then use the belt tension lever to recenter the belt. Once it was tracking properly I was able to put down a lot of pressure without it moving or lagging. This is a great mix of portability and size for your small to medium size projects.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Over all I am happy with the product . I cannot recommend this product because when I took it out of the box I tried the belt tightener and the one weld holding the bottom plate give way . I was able to fix it myself by installing four small bolts to hold it in place which was cheaper to do than send it in and then wait for a new one . Someone else may not be able to do this , my wife was more upset than I because it was A Christmas present .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very solid machine I found this product (which is from the Bosch company) generally very solidly built. The only flimsy thing is the little miter gauge which is made from lightweight plastic. Very little assembly is required and a sanding disk and belt are supplied with the machine so one can be up and running within minutes of opening the box. The ‘table’ at the disc sander can be angled for almost any sanding edge, and the belt sander can be positioned up to 90° vertical. The table can be placed next to the vertical belt too.All very versatile. The hex wrenches used to adjust the table and belt sander are included and I was pleased to see that the base of the machine has a place for them to clip into so that they do not get lost. Belts can be changed very easily and the belt tracking adjustment has a lock nut so one does not have to keep adjusting the tracking. Changing the disk calls for removing the table and three screws. The vacuum port is for 2½” systems which is bigger than my shop-vac pipe so I will probably make a small adaptor for that. The housing can be bolted onto a workbench but so far I have not found that to be needed as the machine is heavy enough to not wander about. The current draw while running (not under load) was measured at 3.17 Amps at 119.6 Volts which is 360Watts. I was able to make nice rounded corners and chamfers very quickly. I would recommend this to anyone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cheaply made I purchased this product mostly because of the positive reviews. However, a few of the reviews were inaccurate. This is not a 'solidly constructed' tool. The online description at time of purchase, stated 'cast iron' base, which was my reason to purchase. It is not cast iron, it is plastic. The on/off switch is also a flimsy, wobbly, piece of plastic which will not hold up. The miter gauge is also plastic and useless. Overall, I would not recommend this table top sander because of the materials used in manufacturing and the overall poorly constructed lack of quality.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cheap Tools are no bargain It had been a while since I replaced my old belt/disk sander. It was a Delta that I purchased about 15 years ago. I guess I suffered sticker shock when I saw what they were going for now, so I opted to get the Skil. It was readily available and the price was right. WELL, never again. It won't stay in adjustment and makes rackety noises while running. I could tell the minute I unpacked it that it was "cheaply" made. It has been a while since I had to use it thus the time span from when I received it and now, but after having to use it a lot lately for a project, I really wish I would have spent the extra money and gotten a Delta, Jet or any other brand that is better made and more accurate. I will admit that the dust collector works pretty good. I'm sure it will service me for a while but I expect failure at any time.
