Answer:
Hammer drills are basically regular drills but can also drill into masonry, hammer drills have a fixed & rotating "rippled" cam plate that when the drill bit is put against the masonry to drill, the 2 plates come into contact and you get a "vibrating" action. This is what aids in the bit drilling through the masonry.

Rated 3.5 out of 5 by 6 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by a major value plus! Having purchased the 6445 to replace my old drill that burnt out installing Hardie cement board over cinder blockblock, I put my masonry bit in it and went to work. Surprise, it did the job with no hiccups, and with ease. Great purchase, can use as hammer drill or normal drill with reverse in either mode! June 2, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by like a hot knife thru butter Got this for a particular job involving masonry. Don't know why I didn't buy one years ago! May 29, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The Right Tool for the Job If your drilling through brick, then you know how difficult it can be with an ordinary drill. The hammer drill is the answer to cutting your drill time by more than half. This durable and reliable drill is easy to use, powerful and made the work easy. Be sure to use the recommended bit for the material to be drilled. February 18, 2015
