Answer:
Hammer drills are basically regular drills but can also drill into masonry, hammer drills have a fixed & rotating "rippled" cam plate that when the drill bit is put against the masonry to drill, the 2 plates come into contact and you get a "vibrating" action. This is what aids in the bit drilling through the masonry.

7-Amp 1/2 in. Hammer Drill is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from great tool I bought this drill because I was rebuilding a porch on my house and also got tired of trying to find replacement batteries for my B&D cordless drill. The torque is unreal and I don't have to worry about the battery dying on me...(as long as there's a power outlet near by). I can actually use nut drivers with and not worry. This machine has done everything I expected it to and more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product and price I needed a drill with some more power to use every so often when my cordless drill did not have enough power to drill through heavier gauge metal. But I did not want to pay an arm and a leg to get it. This drill was perfect. I always associated SKIL with quality at a reasonable price. I try to buy SKIL for all my power tools.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from cheap drill The drill is light and easy the handle , great bargain if you get a good one . not worth a dine if you plan to use as hammer drill on low speed . It will over heat and burn up. the last time I went through 3 till I got a good one that lasted 5 yrs

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Right Tool for the Job If your drilling through brick, then you know how difficult it can be with an ordinary drill. The hammer drill is the answer to cutting your drill time by more than half. This durable and reliable drill is easy to use, powerful and made the work easy. Be sure to use the recommended bit for the material to be drilled.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a major value plus! Having purchased the 6445 to replace my old drill that burnt out installing Hardie cement board over cinder blockblock, I put my masonry bit in it and went to work. Surprise, it did the job with no hiccups, and with ease. Great purchase, can use as hammer drill or normal drill with reverse in either mode!
