Is this fixed or plunge base?

Item label says it is a #1817 fixed base router. However the description says that it includes #1827 router motor, and aluminum plunge base.
Asked by: MSG2U
Thank you for your question. The model 1817 is a Fixed base router. Our model 1827 is a plunge base router. The description for the 1817 is incorrect. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will forward this information so the website can be corrected. If you order the model 1817 you will receive the fixed base router.

What do you do with these routers? I saw some old ones on ebay, but I thought you could sand floors with them. Any way they were very old and looked like these, only not new like this one and they wanted $800.00 for them. I am elderly female and want to sand my dining room but you people don't rent sanders any more, and I have no transportation and am in a rural area. I can really get down on the floor because of bad arthuritis, but can sit on a little ottoman to use a hand sander. Can you suggest anything?
Asked by: ANGEL111
Thank you for your question. A router is not designed to be used for sanding. A router assist with cuts in wood for templates etc. If you are looking for a sander we recommend the 7302 corner detail sander or the 7492 depending on the coverage you are wanting. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Skil-Octo-1-2-Amp-Corded-Electric-Multi-Finishing-Sander-Kit-with-Carrying-Bag-41-Accessories-7302-02/202691015 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Skil-2-8-Amp-Corded-Electric-5-in-Random-Orbital-Sander-with-Dust-Canister-and-3-Sanding-Discs-7492-02/202691017

Does this tool allow above-the-table depth adjustment?

For example, the feature is shown for the Bosch Table Base for 1617/18 Router on the Home Depot site.
Asked by: Richard
Thank you for your question. The 1817 router does not have above the table depth adjustment. The only way to adjust the depth is with the depth adjustment knob.

My problem was in did not work well in my router table which is also a Skill. The depth adjustment would like get hung up, it was like the housing would get cock and bind up, very frustrating when your trying to make some fine adjustments. I never try to use it by it self so I can't say how that would have been. Over all it's a nice looking router with enough power for most DIY projects.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good *IF* you know what you are getting Really, a 3.5 star would be best. As long as you understand what you are getting and are prepared to deal with it, it's a great value. It's very hard to find a 1/2" collet router for this price and to get the price this low, there are a few shortcomings. First, not variable speed, so be prepared to be running full speed all the time with all bits and all materials. Second, no dust collection so it's gonna make a huge mess. Third, and this is mentioned in a lot of reviews, the depth adjustment is garbage. I've not had any issues with it holding once I've locked it in place, but the process of unlocking and locking it into place moves the router. Because of this, there will be a lot of guess work and trial and error in getting the depth correct. If you are going to be setting it once and then running it at the same depth for many cuts in a row it's not a big issue. If you are making lots of smaller cuts with different depths or bits, it will probably drive you mad. That being said, I'm pretty happy with it as it serves its purpose I knew about these shortcomings when I bought it. Still a pretty good value.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Returned - and lost a bit. Used it once but the whole thing broke when trying too loosen the collet nut. I returned it and still couldn't get my bit out. Did a great job the one time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice Router I was surprised at the great way that form follows function for the price. The handles are very comfortable to grip, the alternate on/off switch by your thumb is a nice addition, I have never owned a soft start router before and will never buy one without after using this machine. The micro-feed is very accurate and a handy feature for depth control. The L.E.D. light is fantastic, it lights up when plugged in so you can see what you are doing before starting the router. The only let down was that I could not find a edge guard for this router anywhere. I had to make my own.
