We already had the SkyLinkUniversal Remote Control Kit installed and had been using for the past two years. The remote control kit worked great for our older garage door opener that did not have a keypad, but eventually stopped working, and we couldn't figure out why. I contacted their customer service and adding the power adapter was their suggestion. As soon as we plugged in the adapter, the Skylink garage door opener and the keypad started working again! There must be a battery in the Skylink button that had eventually run down. Anyway, this is a great option if you have an older garage door opener that still works, and do not want to replace the whole thing.
I installed the Universal Remote Control kit myself, it was pretty easy.

I have a very old garage door opener.. a Chamberlain.. circa 1983. All the companies I phoned said that they didn't make remotes for my "Classic". I would need to replace the opener at a cost of $250-$300, installed. I didn't want to change something that wasn't broken.. I just needed a way to use it.
Home Depot to the rescue! They had a Skylink adapter to match my newly discovered universal remote. Needed the extra power for it (my remote) to work. I put the two together and today, I have a FULLY FUNCTIONING garage door!
Tip #1 - Try this BEFORE any updates even if the garage door companies say it's not possible.
Tip #2 - Home Depot now carries Skylink Remotes, Smart Buttons and Adapters. Ask for their advice.
Tip #3 - Avoid shipping charges. Order online and arrange for in-store pickup.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Mitch Garage opener Worked like a charm...BUT
I"ve got an older garage opener and wanted to convert to a non-dipswitched remote. I purchased HomeDepot's Defiant remote unit... I then found out that if you use it on an older garage opener, you need to purchase the 12-vold DC power adapter..... Not a problem, until I went back to HomeDepot to get one.... BUT... THE STORES DON'T CARRY THEM.... BOOO..
If you carry the remote, also carry the power supply!!!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by mrwrite You need this if you are upgrading from a pre-1995 system
This power converter is DESIGNED and MADE for the garage door transmitter replacement of SKYLINK brand. (They make the Home Depot version.) If you have a DIGITAL garage door opener and are replacing it, you do NOT need the power supply. If you have an old ANALOG garage door opener (from the 20th century and is as large as your hand) -- you need this power supply. If you install the garage door opener replacement -the light blinks- and it does not work it might be because you had an old analog device. Otherwise if it works, you do not need the optional power supply.
Because of the size of the connector, the polarity, and the amperage, YOU NEED THIS SPECIFIC DEVICE. Chances are minimal that you can find a 12 volt power converter with the same connector and amps anywhere else.
Since it is only needed for replacing ancient systems, it must be ordered and is not found in stores.

This adapter is required for older garage door openers. It should have been available in the store. So, it cost twice as much since I had to have it shipped to me.
