Customer Questions & Answers

Can this be paired with/attached to a direct vent unit?

Can this be paired with/attached to a direct vent unit?
Asked by: Pb
A chimney is not just an exhaust pipe. A chimney is an air column that creates draft. Draft is needed to pull more combustion air into the firing chamber. If you don;t have a chimney you need to artificially create the draft. So to direct vent this unit you would need a power vent. This is a fan type devise that gets wired into the appliance. Before the appliance fires the unit spins up and creates positive draft. Once confirmed by the proving switch the ignition cycle is allowed to continue. I assume by your question you already know this. I just wanted to spell it out for others that may read this. New boilers, in more popular sizes and styles are available with factory installed power vents. However I make it a practice to always use an after market power vent that is external to the appliance. I do this because the power vent will usually not last as long as the appliance. This is due to the corrosive nature of the exhaust. When failure occurs I simply use what ever appropriate power vent is available rather than searching and waiting for the appropriate parts to fix the one that is factory installed internally. So if I needed to replace my steam boiler and I did not have a chimney I would install a natural draft steam boiler, like this one,. and install and external power vent to it. With limited limited information I am not going to suggest a specific one but you are welcome to call and we can discuss. Also remember steam is a forgotten art. Most people that had good knowledge of it died before most of us were born. Steam is counter intuitive. The near boiler piping must be done in accordance to the installation instructions for that boiler or it will not work correctly. Meaning you cant just cut the pipe coming out of the old one and slide in a new one and expect it to work. Do your home work and ask the questions so you don;t have to reinstall it. Does this unit come with the circulater ?
Asked by: Jim
No this would not come with a circulator as this is a steam boiler. No steam boiler would come with a curculator as pumps are not used on steam.

2 questions: Can this unit be used to heat radiators? Secondly, can I use this unit with a chimney? (current unit uses chimney exhaust) Thank you
Asked by: GA2
This is a steam boiler. So it is designed to work in a steam system. As there are both steam and water systems that use radiators I am somewhat reluctant to answer without confirming that your system is steam. As to venting. This is a natural draft steam boiler. It is designed to be used with a chimney. Steam in many ways is a forgotten art. And with steam systems, installation is everything. The "near boiler piping" that is the piping withing 5' of the boiler is part of the boiler. It must be done correctly or the steam boiler will not work correctly. If you have questions on steam please feel free to give me a call. Chris 978 651 3301

Does Chris, who responded to the previous question, work for Home Depot or Slant/Fin?

Asked by: Jake
Forgive me as the portal in which I answer these questions does not display the prior ones, But I am Chris and I have been providing The Home Depot with hydronic heating product for many a decade. So I assume it is me you are looking for. Technically I do not work for either Slant Fin or Home Depot, but unofficially both are great companies and we pride ourselves on working for both of them. Wet heat is only 5% of the heating systems in the U.S, The majority is hot air. As a result hydronics is kind of a niche industry serviced by old companies. Hydronic heating is kind of like the language of Latin. It is somewhat of a dead language but still has its uses and applicatins The people at Home Depot are very smart and recognized this. When they moved into New England in the early 90's they new there customer would want boilers but that the market was small and did not justify bringing that skill set inside there organization. Instead they partnered with a local family owned plumbing supply house so they could provide there customer with regional expertise. Don't get me wrong its not brain surgery but it is one of those industries where you learn best practices over a life time and that type of resource can be very helpful.
