how many sq ft will it heat

how many sq ft will it heat
Asked by: af
There is not direct relationship between square footage of floor space and how many BTU's are required. Size is only one aspect of calculating heat load. As I am sure you can image the same home located in a cold climate would need a lot more capacity than if it were located in a cold one. The proper way to determine how much capacity should be installed is called a heat loss calculation. There are quite a few free programs on line that do this. You enter the room sizes, location, construction type, windows, etc, and it will calculate how much heat the structure will lose on the coldest hour of the coldest day of the year. This is a must when building a new home. For boiler replacements, assuming the existing system did the job, you can sometimes work back from what is already installed. You can look at the rating plate of the boiler to be replaced, or add up the capacity of the installed element. For example if this boiler is installed and set up to put our 131,000 BTU's we know that is enough capacity to supply 225 feet of conventional baseboard. If you have further questions you can give me a call. Chris 978 651 3301

Is this boiler on demand or does it always run to keep the water at temperature?

Asked by: crackshot
When you have a boiler equipped with a tankless coil the boiler maintains temperature between the high and low limit. Usually 180F on the high and 140F on the low. That way the boiler always has hot thermal mass, so when you run the potable water. It can go through the coil an be instantly heated. If not you would have to wait some time for the boiler to heat up if you wanted hot water. Obviously the boiler is hot during the winter, because it is doing its primary function which is creating heating water. But during the summer it is maintaining temp just for hot domestic water. To the novice this may seem very inefficient either from an energy or cost stand point. But its not. I don't want to get to long with my explanation but if anyone is curious to understand the math and logic of why its not you can give me a call. Now the alternative to keeping the boiler hot and using a coil is a device called an indirect fired hot water heater. Basic this is a tank with a coil in it that goes outside the boiler. Because the tank which is designed like a Thermos bottle has stored hot water, the boiler no longer needs to maintain temp. The boiler goes cold when not needed because the stored water will be utilized while the boiler is heating up. Indirect hot water heaters are great products and you utilize them because they can produce massive amounts of hot water. Although they are more efficient the saving is not enough to cause them to pay for themselves. Basically coils are just not that bad. Chris 978 651 3301

I've owned a Liberty- Slant Fin for 25 yrs....changed a pump , igniters , nozzles but the furnace runs like a bear. One thing not mentioned about cast iron is they have a lube and scale cleaner its really inexpensive that will add yrs to your boiler. Hercules 35206- So easy to clean .....really easy to service. Been doing it myself for ten years now. Every October she gets cleaned, every two months in the winter a new nozzle , summer not needed it only supplies hot water. They also sell a cast iron boiler sealer. Boiler solder-by Hercules- What I don't like are the new igniters. I switched back to the old style- hard to find. But they last forever (some over 20 yrs) the new ones not so much. Supply House is my go to plumbing store. Unreal service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Boiler I was looking for a replacement boiler. Just a simple old school boiler that I could install and service myself if needed. Newer 3 pass style boilers may be more efficient than this one but this pin type has been around for 80 years at least. Easy to get parts for. Any burner tech will understand it unlike some newer type boilers that take a specialist to diagnose and repair. This boiler fit the bill. Completely satisfied with it so far. Reasonably quiet. Comes with a circulator and a draft control, two nozzles and some plumbing parts. Easy to clean with the swing out door. Old couple here in northern Maine had a new efficient "computerized" type installed. The tech moved away and there was nobody within 200 miles that knew how to work on it when it failed. Something to consider if you live in a rural area. The biggest selling point for me is SIMPLE. An excellent value for the money.

I have one in my house for the last 5 years and just installed one in my Dad's house. Ships right to your door. Built to last and easy to install. The only difference from the picture is the color, it will come dark Gray on the outside and light Gray on the center.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No frills, just works I've had this unit now for about 5-6 years. While it is not the quietest oil furnace, it works. Cast iron components seem sturdy. Simple controls and setup. Make sure you understand oil combustion and installation procedures. I would say that this is comparable to the Weil McClain WGO series. But, unlike the Weil McClain boilers, this one comes with the burner making it much less expensive.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from depot staff made the purchace work on this boiler The homeowner install with the help of an experienced boiler guy was done in 5 hours. But the burner would not fire. After research we discovered that the electric coil on the Beckett burner malfunctioned. The Depot staff at the place of purchase took one off a burner they had in stock, so we wouldn't need to wait for Beckett to send it. The replacement part and the burner has worked fine for a month.
