at 230 volts you have two hot leads each 115 to 120 and a neutral witch also serves as the ground. the 50 amp socket it uses only has 3 prongs

Answer:
Hey Martin,
Unfortunately no, this welder is a 230 volt and is not dual voltage. You wouldn't be able to weld at 120 volts.

200 Amp IGBT Inverter ARC Welder is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice tool! MAchine works well! However ground and stinger cord could be at least four foot longer to avoid showering machine with sparks as cords are so short machine has to be in on or very close to workpiece. The accessories that come with it are all trash except for the glass that goes into the shield but since I got the unit for $200.00 it was worth that price as the welder works very well! The fact that it is so small and can be carried like a toolbox is also excellent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as expected Since it's an inverter it's very lightweight and small. I'm welding stainless steel with it and it works just fine. I wired a second outlet to my dryer - which is the same 30amp rating. As is to be expected with "provided" equipment, go get yourself a decent welding helmet and a wire brush / hammer. The enclosed welding shield may work, but it's really flimsy. Investing into an auto-darkening welding helmet will make your project a lot smoother. Other than that - I can crank it up to 200 amps and burn nice big holes into 1/4 inch stainless steel - so there's plenty of power to go around. I've used it for a week now and it's still working. I can't say anything about longevity just yet, but it didn't start smelling or smoking or anything like that :-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Looks good so far, but something need to keep in mind Unit is compact and light. This unit is 240V ONLY as a trade off for reasonable price and 200A output. Quality of build is average (closer to cheap side). It was good deal when I bought it (before HD raised the price). 3 years warranty was the main reason in my decision to try this welder. This unit comes with 3 ft ground cable and 5 ft stinger cable. Ground clamp is flimsy. If you plan to replace welding cables and buy connectors to the unit, be sure you order Dinse 30-50( DSK-50). *** Manual specify DSK-25 (Dinse 10-25) which is INCORRECT. *** Minimum recommended size cable for DSK-50 is #1. However, It is better to keep welding cables short. Then you need extension cord for 240V. Unit has NEMA 6-50 plug (240V 50A). Manual claims you need only 12-3 extension cord, but does not say what length is allowable. There is no explanation why you can use 12-3 extension cable (rated 20A) for 40A equipment. Be sure you buy 600V rated extension cord (most cords for 115V are rated for 300V), plus you need to replace plugs. You can buy 8-3 240V welder extension cord with correct plugs, but I could not find it at Home Depot. As noted in other review you need to calculate the cost of upgrade to suit you. If you buy it for home use, do not forget you need dedicated 240V circuit. It looks like manual was written for 110V model with lower output current. There is some confusing information in the manual. Accessories (mask, hammer/brash) are OK for trying the unit. Need better ones for real work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unit was what I expected. Welder has a solid feel. The case, handle, pwr. cord, current adj. pot. etc. The unit is ETL Testing Lab Listed and marked though the spec's. don't say this. I have been using it for about 2 weeks and I am working the safety circuits because starting the arc is not as easy as it looks. I wanted a welder with more power than my little MIG unit and this unit is exactly what I needed. The work leads could be longer but you can replace the cables. Like the other review get a regular helmet.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best little welder on the market This is an amazing little welder. Throw away everything that comes with it, except for the welder and power cord. Upgraded the stinger, ground clamp and cables and this little welder will out perform anything on the market at twice it's price. It's easy to use light weight and compact. I highly recommend this welder to professions and hobiest alike.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great welder, good value, some things to keep in mind The welder works well. I've had a Lincoln 225 AC welder for 35 years, and this took very little adapting to (some adapting this being a DC versus AC welder). I was able to pick it up quickly and make good welds in 1/8th to 1/2" steel (strength, penetration, and cosmetic). This welder has very comparable power and welding capabilities to the Lincoln 225 (with the notable DC versus AC difference). For $219 delivered to the door, it is a very solid value. A few things to keep in mind. 1) the technical information given on the HomeDepot.com website are sorely lacking (ideally they should have the owners manual available on-line). For example, just knowing that it has a 2-pole-plus-ground 240 volt 50 amp plug would have been nice (this plug looks like a standard 120v plug, but is much larger). 2) all accessories that come with the welder (including the welding leads) you will more than likely want to replace (leads are very short but otherwise ok). I had everything already (electronic mask, chipping hammer, extra welding lead wire, etc), so the price for me was very solid. It would be wise for the potential buyer to factor in the upgrade-costs of all accessories before purchasing this. 3) quality looks good with a quick inspection, but upon a closer look the Phillips screw heads that hold it together are slightly stripped, which gives the appearance of it not being assembled in a decent factory. Would I make the purchase again knowing what I know now? Yes. Think that pretty much says it all. I will be very happy if it is reliable for many years to come. (June 2012)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No complaints I had wanted a small DC welder for a long while, so gave this Smarter Tools S-200i a try (it was a Special Buy of the Day). It is light, easy to use, and welds 1/8 6010 rods with no problem. It is all plastic on the outside, but seems sturdy enough, and well made. As a total amateur, I am happy with this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from For this money($162) best welder on the market! For those who buy this welder to weld, this is best deal on the market. Cheaper than this only Harbor Freight tools welders(less power and worse than "smarter tool" quality). For collectors and professional weldors buy Miller or Lincoln. I'm hobbyist weldor, and welding every day. It was only two days since I bought it. So far i'm impressed. Welder got plenty of power, portable and easy to use. Please buy all accessories separate. Those who complaint about mask and brush quality, please buy Lincoln or Miller and you get same type of bad unusable accessories.
